Giving away a horse

A retiring farmer in preparation for selling his land, needed to rid his farm of animals.

To the houses where the man is the boss, he gave a horse. To the houses where the woman is the boss, a chicken.

He saw a couple outside gardening. "Who’s the boss around here?" he asked.

"I am." said the man.

"I have a black horse and a brown horse," the farmer said, "which one would you like?"

The man thought, "The black one."

"No, no, no, get the brown one." the man’s wife said.

"Here’s your chicken."

Gas Order to Be Revoked.

Natural gas is to be furnished to the mining companies in the west end of the county for fuel next winter, after all. The Kansas Natural Gas company issued a notice last spring to the effect that all parties using gas for heating boilers would have to discontinue the use of gas for such purposes this fall. It was announced that these patrons would still be permitted to use the gas in gas engines, however, and many mining companies have this summer been equipping themselves with gas engines in order to meet the emergency. This order was made so that the gas pressure for domestic consumption would be more satisfactory during the cold weather than has been the case in the past.

However, George H. Bruen, manager of the Webb City and Carterville Gas Company, was notified by wire Saturday that the order has been revoked.

12 Percent of Stimulus Money Has Been Spent.

by Christopher Flavelle, ProPublica www.propublica.com

Nearly six months after the ginormous stimulus bill passed, politicians and economists are arguing about whether it has made much of a dent in the limping economy. (see inside for complete breakdown of funds allocated to Jasper County.)

Defenders of the bill — President Barack Obama among them — insist it is too soon to tell because the stimulus hasn’t had much of a chance to work. They have one key fact on their side — though it’s a fact critics could just as easily use: Only $70 billion, or about 12 percent of the $580 billion in the spending portion of the stimulus package, is out the door so far. (It’s much more difficult to track the tax cut portion, which makes up the bill’s remaining $212 billion.)

Moreover, that 12 percent includes some $13 billion from the Social Security Administration in one-time $250 checks to current Social Security recipients. Those Social Security checks make up almost one-fifth of the stimulus "spending" so far.

Mornin',

I see they are comin’ to some startlin’ conclusions ‘bout how ta live longer. They are sayin’ ta eat right, get some exercise, and don’t worry about it. Odd, but seems those have been words of advice for the last hunderd years or so.

The difference, before it was just common sense, now it’s a scientific fact.

Seems your brain wearin’ out causes more problems to appear and starts ya on the down hill slide. If you’re in general good health, payin’ attention to the gray matter can add years to your life. Excersise keeps plenty of blood flowin’ to the head, good eatin’ gives the brain the nourishment it needs to keep in shape, and keepin’ stress at a low level lets the brain spend more time doin’ some constructive mental excersise. Who’d a thunk it?

This is some fact, but mostly,

ART NOTES from Hyde House

by Sally Armstrong, Director of artCentral

Annual kid’s artCamp completes on Saturday, and we have enjoyed a lively group of forty seven children this year, participating in 144 places in the 15 classes offered this year. We were pleased to welcome back six teachers from past years, and we think the variety of classes offered was good. Sometimes it is not always been known who has assisted us in the endeavor of our artCamp, and this year we are pleased to recognize and thank publicly several sponsors who have given financial aide through grants or financial aid as scholarships to our students. The local Helen Boylan Foundation was kind enough to award us financial assistance in response to our application, and we are most fortunate to have been granted this aid once again. New for us this year was a cash award from the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri for artCamp, and we were grateful too for this. Also to be recognized and thanked this year are Ruth Kolpin Rubison and the Kolpin Foundation for a grant given for artCamp. We appreciate all of these sponsors, and hope that after reports are submitted to them, that they will consider us worthy to award to again in the future. Separately, we have a number of individuals and a foundation that have scholarshiped several students from this year’s camp. Thanks go out to the Anna Iles Foundation for their support, to Sandy Higgins for her generous award given this year to fund a student, and to the Adam Vandergriff Foundation in his memory, to assist students. Expenses to properly present our camp event can be great, and though we do charge a tuition to those students who can pay, our camp could not happen without the help of our friends in the community. Our sincere thanks to you all!
