I hate to fix things around the house. That’s why everything works.

You have heard it said before that this man needs no introduction. Well, I have heard him, and he needs all the introduction he can get!

Gertie the receptionist comes into the office and proudly displays a diamond bauble on her finger. Grinning, she says, "It’s a boy — six foot one and a hundred eighty-five pounds."

"I see your application says you’re twenty-five. If you join our company at the bottom, what will you be in three years?"
"Twenty-eight."

EUGENE V. DEBS IN TOWN.

He Would Continue and Extend the Trusts - He is Against Expansion and Says There is no Prosperity.

Eugene V. Debs, the noted labor leader and the Social Democratic candidate for president, arrived in Carthage on last evening’s Frisco and is quartered at the Harrington. Mr. Debs came here direct from Joliet, Illinois, where he spoke on Wednesday night. He is to lecture at the Grand tonight, and will fill a series of engagements at towns in this region.

A reporter called on him at his rooms at the hotel this morning and had a forty-five minutes’ chat with him. Mr. Debs looks to be about forty-five years of age. He is smooth shaven and is partially bald, giving him the appearance of having an exceedingly high forehead. He is very affable, and a most pleasant gentleman to meet. He was in his shirt sleeves this morning, when the reporter was ushered into his room.

"You have a pretty town here," said Mr. Debs. "I got up early this morning for a little stroll and I saw a great deal to admire. I should judge you have a busy, active city also." He then asked a number of questions concerning the electric railway, in the length of which and the number of towns reached he was much interested.

Council Request Fulfilled.

The City has received a report as requested on the proposed use of the $28,333.33 fee for contracted services with the Carthage Chamber of Commerce. The funding was appropriated by the Council for economic development services contract for the period from March 1 to June 30, 2000. The contract is scheduled to be renewed at the beginning of the fiscal year for an annual amount of $85,000.

The report, which was in the form of a letter from the Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors Bob Copeland to Mayor Kenneth Johnson, gave brief descriptions and overviews of expenses the Chamber expects to incur during the remainder of the budget year for economic development activities. CW&EP has agreed to share the expense of the contract with the City.

Under the agreement, the City & CW&EP funds will be used to pay approximately 80% of salaries for Chamber President Max McKnight and half of a secretarial position. Other miscellaneous expenses and overhead will also be allowable. A quarterly report by the Chamber for City/CW&EP funds is a requirement of the contract.

A Few artCamp Classes Already Set!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Our Life Drawing sessions started off with a bang !! Last Thursday we had five people attend !! They really liked the new class-room..........so much more room !! When we did these drawing evenings last year we were forced to use one of the second floor bedrooms. Not terrible...just a bit cramped once you get the model, props, lights, chairs.....and then you have to find room for the people who are there to draw !!

Three cheers for the drawing group !! There is plenty of room for more so if you want to try it or know someone who does just send them this way around six on Thursdays !!

We are hoping to get some changes made this summer to those upstairs bedrooms. We have decided to make the larger one into another classroom and the smaller one into a gallery for our members !!

With an actual gallery up there our members would be able to bring in a few pieces of their work for display and to sell. We always need more art in here for folks to look at !!

Great news !! Our artCamp schedule is filling up nicely !! So far we have had lots of teachers contact us and want to set up something as well as already having six of the twelve days booked !!

So far we know we will be offering mosaic, which will be a two day project. Lis McCool from Anderson will guide the kids in a project 18 inches by 18 inches !! This class will include drawing, painting, bashing, gluing and grouting !! Sounds like a ton of fun !!

Judy Porter and Jeannie Martin from Butler, MO and Springfield, respectively, will again this year offer a wide variety of projects. These two artists have taught at artCentral for YEARS !! We sooo appreciate them coming back year after year !! Some of their projects include sculpture, painting, cari-catures and mixed media. They have signed up for three days !! This will give the kids a lot to experience !!

Riki Lipe from Springfield will be with us again this year. She teaches writing and illustration so the kids will actually create their own little book !! Looks like we’re off and running !!!

More.......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations. Our hours are Tues. - Sat. 9am - 3pm and Sundays 12 - 4pm.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

They’re have been a few decent tv commercials come out over the last year or so. The ability to make dogs, lizards and babies appear to talk (bob, the internet kid) seems ta be the fad. These high tech wonders get your attention ‘cause they are cute.

The best use of the computer generated images I’ve see though is one where ya don’t expect it. It’s the one where ya see an exterminator lookin’ for somethin’ and all the sudden there is some critter runnin’ here and there on what appears to be the surface of your tv screen. Fortunately they only let the illusion go on for a few seconds and appear to spray the critter and it falls safely inside the set. It’s creepy. I’ve only seen it once, but the affect left a real impression.

This is some fact, but mostly,

This is a wonderful time of year..... anytime can be when you are feeling well. However, when I was digging out my flowerbed, which had been neglected for several years, it had some wonderful dandelion growth. It was not an easy job until I decided to keep the roots and brew them up that evening with some of the mint that had taken over as well. What a great combination with dual reward. My flower bed is clean and I have enough tea to do a spring flush. Dandelion is well known in the traditional usage of herbs as a excellent survival food and is "also used as a diuretic and for diabetes. It has the ability to cleanse obstructions and stimulate the liver to detoxify poisons. The juice from the stem can be applied and allowed to dry to treat worts."*

It is also said to help nourish the blood, liver and spleen and contains many nutrients which may be useful in treating anemia

Lots of requests for recipe we had recently taste tested. So simple and easy it is almost a shame to admit. It is one of those you start with basics and end with the basics. That easy and most nutritious.

One pkg. of smoked flavored tofu cut into one inch squares. Try It!

One pkg. frozen Easy Meal with organic vegetables and seasoning sauce.

Heat small amount of olive oil in wok or hot skillet stirring until browned (about one minute) add the vegetables, sauce mixed w/water, cover and steam for approx. 10 min. Easy and very nutritional, and faster than waiting in line at a fast food place!! You may add any other goodies you like to mix and serve with rice. Pkg. says serves 2. I serve 4 with side rice.
