The quickest way for a parent to get a kid’s attention is to sit down and look comfortable.

A terrible writer sent in a manuscript. It was returned a few days later with a note from the editor: Am returning this paper. Somebody wrote on it.

We had a power failure in our house. My wife lost her voice.

I don’t mind being average, because it means I’m as close to the top as I am to the bottom.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

IT WAS A HOT FIGHT.

H. Anderson Choked a Wolf to Death But Was Mangled in the Conflict.

Hugh Anderson, a well known citizen of McDonald county, was in the city today for the first time in nearly a year. He was terribly bitten and mangled in a hand-to-hand contest with a trapped wolf last summer, and has only recently recovered from his injuries. His face is badly disfigured, but in commenting on the fight he took a grim satisfaction in stating that he choked his enemy to death single handed.

The Eastern Star lodge held a special meeting last evening and initiated Miss Bradley. A large number of lodge members were out and at the close of the meeting ice cream and cake were served, which were much enjoyed by all.

Budget Adjustments.

The City Council Budget Ways and Means Committee is scheduled to meet this evening in City Hall at 7 p.m. The agenda includes consideration of an exclusive seller’s agreement for Myers Park Development property with Southwest Agency. An earlier plan was discarded due to a landslide of amendments being placed on the original contract. Committee Chair Jackie Boyer recommended the Council vote down the original so the Committee could restructure the contract and bring it back for consideration.

The Committee is also scheduled to review the final finances of the July 4th Red, White and Boom celebration. Initial figures indicated that the event went over budget by approximately $12,000.

Consideration of a two day City Visioning Meeting, with a proposed administrative cost of $4,000, is also scheduled.

The Committee has also been directed by the Council to look at ways to fund approximately $35,000 more than budgeted for construction of a new traffic signal system and modifications to the intersection. The project was budgeted for $100,000 but bids for that price have not been forthcoming..

Mornin',

The ongoin’ discussion concernin’ the function and necessity of the Kellogg Lake area Because of its semi isolated location, it has always attracted crowds duin’ the after hours. Trash is the biggest problem that comes up it seems.

An effort is bein’ made to place more trash containers around the area and to secure them to the earth somehow so they don’t end up in the lake. Some community involvement is goin’ to continue to be encouraged. The possibility of bannin’ glass containers from the City Parks is also bein’ considered.

These efforts, along with a day or two of real cleanin’ may at least show there is interest in keepin’ the park up ta snuff. Closin’ the area is not an option, maybe a neighborhood watch would help.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell and Kelly Carrell

Dear Al & Kelly:

Since my workshop is large, I need to use extension cords quite a bit. I try to keep them off of the floor so they don’t get damaged and I don’t trip over them. I just use clothespins to clip them to my workbench, garage-door track, a shelf, trash can or whatever is next to where I am working. It’s much safer and my cords last longer. - B.D.

A Super Hint - If you are going to paint your outdoor steps, add some sand to the paint. It will help cut down on slippery surfaces.

Dear Al: I bought a new wooden screen door and painted it to match the trim on our home. I came up with a super way to paint the wire screen to match. I used a regular kitchen sponge to apply the paint. It didn’t clog up the screen holes or waste the paint. I know you don’t have to paint the screening, but it looks so much nicer, I think. W.D.

Q: I have an outside faucet in my back yard that is always dripping water. I tried to tighten down the screw on the top of the handle and found that it was rusted in place and wouldn’t budge. What will work to free it up? L.K.

A: Try a rust remover or penetrating oil first. Put some around the screw on the top and give it plenty of time to work. If it doesn’t work, you can drill out the rusted screw. .or replace the entire faucet. They don’t cost very much!
