I call my car "Snake."
Why?
Because it always rattles before it strikes.

You see you have to be careful in that hotel—when you turn on the hot water faucet cold water comes out. And when you turn on the cold water faucet hot water comes out. But it doesn’t make any difference.
Why not?
There’s no hot water.

Cheese is milk’s leap towards immortality.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

An Original Charles Smith.

Charles Smith, who is mentioned among the jail arrivals from Joplin, is in for a strictly original scheme. He borrowed a wheelbarow from a man in East Joplin and took it across the ravine where he sold it for three dollars to another man. Watching his opportunity, Smith stole the wheelbarrow from the last purchaser, and returned it to the original owner. He will now serve a term in jail for his originality.

Mrs. E.K. Peugnet with her baby and maid arrived this morning from St. Louis to spend a month or two with her parents, Judge and Mrs. E.O. Brown. Mrs. Peugnet has been suffering from chills and fever and comes here to recover her health.

Council Agenda for Tomorrow.

The City Council is scheduled to consider two change orders for construction projects during their regular meeting Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall.

Both change orders are for a deduction of the original contract. A deduction of $2,141 for the River/Highway 96 project and a deduction of $743 for the George Phelps Boulevard project will be considered.

The Council is also scheduled for their annual ritual of levying general taxes upon real property within the City and setting the tax levy. The levy amount is regulated by State statute. The proposal before the Council is to keep the tax levy at the ninety-five cent level that is currently in place.

The agenda also includes second readings of Council bill 00-66 vacating an alley between Fairlawn Avenue, Main and Maple Streets; C.B. 00-67 vacating a utility easement in the 300 Block of Lyon Street; and the possible reconsideration of C.B. 00-65 amending the Lodging Tax Fund budget line items for Victorian Carthage.

First reading bills include one for Chestnut/Garrison intersection improvements and one for visioning seminar.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

If you’ve never taken the time to stop by the Midwest Gathering, this should be a good year to start the tradition. From what I hear they are gonna have ‘bout forty artists at the show this year. One a the most encouragin’ things is that you can see the art and talk to the artists for free all day Saturday.

‘Course the auction on Saturday evening is always excitin’ ‘cause ya get ta see a little competition among the bidders and the artists.

The show is a little different than most since the entry fee for the artists comes outa auction rather than them havin’ ta put up cash. It’s also a by invite only for the artists, so there is always some real talent showin’. Sept. 9 & 10.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell and Kelly Carrell

Dear Carrells: When I needed to cut a piece of sandpaper for a sanding block recently, I used my heavy-duty pruning shears because they were handy. What I found out was that just by cutting through the sandpaper, my shears were sharper. After cutting through several times, they were a lot sharper. Now I always save scraps of sandpaper and use them for sharpening my scissors and shears.

A SUPER HINT-By mixing white glue with white toilet paper, you can make quick wall patches for tiny holes from nails used to hang pictures. Make a thick paste, and spread it over the small holes. then watch them dissappear.

Q: My bathroom shower has ceramic tile that was painted. The paint is starting to peel off in some places. I would like to remove all the paint. But I’m afraid to scrape it, as I don’t want to damage the tiles and the grout underneath. How can I get the rest of the paint off? -A.W.

A: You might try a paint stripper that is removable with a blast of water.

If you decide to use such a product, first try it in an out-of-the-way spot and see if it harms the tile.

Most ceramic surfaces are pretty tough. The stripper is not likely to hurt the tiles.

The grout probably needs to be replaced anyway.
