INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

A Bad Tumble For Two.

A couple of gentlemen leaving the Chautauqua grounds last evening received bad tumbles from their bicycles just north of the entrance, in going down the steep grade. Torn clothing, bent handlebars and sundry bruises tell the story.

A Children’s Party.

Little Fern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Driesbach, was treated to a pleasant surprise by several of her classmates yesterday afternoon. Ice cream, cake and lively games occupied them from 2 o’clock until 4 o’clock.

The crowd comprised Ellen Johnson, Robert Johnson, Eric Edstrom, Essie Lundrum, Wesley Johnson, Mattie Booker, and Lute Booker.

Preparing For Marian Days.

Preparations for the annual Marian Days celebration continue for the larger than usual crowd that is expected for the event this year. In addition to the CMC grounds being pruned and shined, City departments are also gearing up.

The Carthage Police Department has secured use of one of three State mobile command centers for the occasion. This is the second year the Department will have used the state of the art vehicle. It will be the equivalent of a self contained police department during the event.

Due to the expected increase in attendance, security will begin on Tuesday this year, a day earlier than in the past. The Department has seen arrivals earlier in the week over the last several years and requested funding for the additional manpower this year.

The event has drawn crowds that have been estimated as large as 50,000. A request by CMC to make the Myers Park Development property available as an overflow camp ground were turned down by the City Council concerns about providing security at two distinct locations.

artCamp Was a HUGE Summer Success!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Whew !!...........that’s the sounds of teachers heading home after a very successful 2 week artCamp !! The kids really enjoyed themselves and had a great time playing in Katherine’s beautiful yard during lunch and breaks !!

They also loved having "Stinky" come everyday and play outside with them. Stinky is a little Yorkshire Terrier, with a bad haircut, that loves to hang out here in the gallery.

Judy Porter, Butler, and Jeanie Martin, Springfield, held three days of art madness !! They did comic strips and cartooning, sculp-ture and painting. Judy is a caricature artist and did a cute drawing of each student as well.

Tom Jones, Carthage, did printmaking on Thursday and Riki Lipe, Springfield, worked with the kids on Friday as they wrote a story and illustrated it for a book !!

We are so very thankful for all of the wonderful teachers and assistants !! Were are also very pleased with all of the new kids we met and hope we will see them more in the future !!

Most of all we are VERY, VERY thankful to the Helen S Boylan Foundation for their support of artCamp 2000 !!

Right now we are having a short showing of Katherine Hyde’s paintings !! We will keep this exhibit up until August 18th and hope everyone will have enough time to stop in and take a look !! Her paintings are interesting in her choice of colors and subject matter. We have become quite fond of her exotic beach scenes in purples, pinks and char-treuse!

Sculpture and drawing sessions are bing combined this month and expanded !! We will now meet from 4-7pm on Thursdays. The first two hours will be an extended pose with the last hour being a couple of poses.

This way whether your drawing or sculpting you will have the opportunity to work on more than one piece at a time !! Anyone interested in either of these two mediums just give us a call or just come on over Thursday at four !!

Thanks again to everyone involved in artCamp!!!

More.......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations. Our hours are Tues. - Sat. 9am - 3pm.

Mornin',

After years of listenin' to the variety of telemarketers give their patter durin' supper time, ya start to give 'em ratings after ya tell 'em to get lost.

The easy ones to hang up on are the pushy type. The always start with some kinda joke or cute remark about the weather. 'Course most of 'em are in a different time zone and don't have a clue 'bout the climate in this part of the country. The real friendly ones get shot down quickest.

There are some ya gotta feel a little sorry for. They stumble over the words as they try to get enthused about what ever product they are pushin' today. I've even listened to a complete pitch from a couple, just ta give 'em practice. I give 'em a few kind words and tell 'em not to get too discouraged. They have a tough job and are goin' to get a lot of no's. Then I tell 'em to take me off the list and not to call again. Figure they might as well get the full lesson.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin'.

If you have not already harvested some dandelion root, it is time. Gather the tap root of a healthy looking dandelion from an area that has not been sprayed or fertilized. Chop the dandelion root into pieces before roasting or drying as it is hard to cut them afterwards. When the roots are completely dried, store them in a jar with a tight lid away from any direct sunlight or direct heat.

Dandelion has been an herb of choice for centuries. The leaves have been a common ingredient in early spring salads for it’s blood building and detoxifying qualities. The juice from the stem is a common cure for warts, even though it takes a little longer, the price is right and persistence is the key to watching the wart disappear. In Louise Tenney’s Today’s Herbal Health, she states that human and animal research have shown that the rhizomes and roots increase the flow of bile which is beneficial for liver disorders, hepatitis, bile duct inflammation, gallstones, jaundice and the bile duct. It works to increase bile production in the liver which in turn increases the flow to the gallbladder, as well as contracting and releasing stored bile in the gallbladder.

Dandelion has a high mineral and vitamin content. Dandelion is available in capsules for those who do not wish to harvest their own.
