Police Called to Account.

Officer Hurst Has Tendered His Resignation to Mayor Ross.

There have been rumors afloat for a day or two that some changes in the police force are pending. Mayor Ross was around Saturday night looking into the workings of police affairs, and it is said was satisfied that the posted rules in regard to the habits of policemen were not being strictly lived up to in every respect particularly the rule in regard to drinking.

It is authoritatively stated that the resignation of Policeman Asa Hurst now lies in the mayor’s hands. The mayor and Officer Hurst held a conference yesterday afternoon which resulted in the resignation being laid in the mayor’s hands about four o’clock. A friend of the officer remarked that he "thought the resignation a hasty one, and that Officer Hurst ought to, and would be willing to live up to the rules strictly if it were not too late to arrange to do so."

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to approve the "concept" of a roundabout intersection at Airport Drive, Fairlawn Drive and Grand Avenue.

Representatives of the Missouri Department of Transportation attended the regular Council meeting and showed a short video of how the proposed roundabout would function. MoDOT has $100,000 available for the project in special funding and the approval of the concept was necessary to get that funding committed.

The intersection is projected to cost in the neighborhood of $300,000 and further negotiations will determine how much of that the City would need to provide to get the project completed. More information and more complete estimates will be available before the City has to obligate funds to the project according to the representatives.

The Council also voted 5-4 to place the question of raising the lodging tax from 2% to 4% on next April’s election ballot. Council member Clark was not present. A Council bill will be placed in first reading at the next regular meeting. Those opposed favored a special election in August.

Some concern was raised in Finance Committee about the amount of the monthly water bill for Central Park. After a new meter was installed a few months ago, the City started gettin’ bills that showed about five hunderd bucks a water usage a month.

The matter is bein’ looked into. The unusual discovery of the Committee was that the fountain in the park is simply hooked to a water line and overflow goes into the sewer.

The Committee is recommendin’ that some sort a recirculatin’ pump be installed to keep the fountain’ flowin’. For the winter the water is shut down so the issue should be resolved ‘fore the warm weather permits the fountain’s spay to surge once again.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Click and Clack Talk Cars

Dear Tom and Ray:

I have a Mercury Grand Marquis, and it has been a great car. It rides beautifully and I’ve had no trouble with it. But it SOUNDS like a junker!

The fan belt wheezes, screeches and screams. When I spray it, it stays quiet for about three days. The fellow at the gas station said the belt looked good, so he hesitated to replace it. What can I do to make this car quiet down? - Joe.

RAY: If the belt is relatively new, Joe, I think the problem is more likely to be your belt tensioner.

TOM: This car has a tensioner that’s supposed to automatically take up the slack as the belt inevitably gets older and looser. And if yours isn’t working, that would explain all the "loose belt" noise.

RAY: It’s worth trying a new belt, Joe. But if the noise comes back before too long, then I’d put in a new tensioner, and that should solve the problem.

TOM: And just be thankful all you’ve got is belt noise. When my brother is driving, the wheezing, screeching and screaming is all coming from us passengers!
