This mother got a letter from her son in the army telling her he’d grown another foot. So she knitted him another stocking.

A burglar breaks into a house and hears a voice say, "I see you. The saint sees you."
The burglar shrugs and heads for the bedroom. At the steps he hears, "I see you. The saint sees you."
The burglar looks around, and in the corner of the den he sees that it’s the voice of a parrot. He snickers and goes back to work. At the steps, he looks up to see a giant dog staring down at him. He hears the parrot say, "Sic ‘im , Saint."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Can Take Care of Itself.

Yesterday the case of Logan vs Alyea was dropped, Prosecuting Attorney Shannon refusing to file information against the defendant. Alyea was arrested for starting a disturbance at the opera house the night Della Rocco and her "living pictures" were here. Mr. Shannon says that the opera house pays license to the city, is under the care of the city and three police men were there that night and should have made any arrests that were necessary or proper.

Ex-Governor Renfro has expressed the belief that large sales of mining property, involving sums in the hundreds of thousands, were over for the present. As the governor has been as large a buyer as any in the district, his opinion naturally carries some weight. It is not meant by this that investors will cease coming in and buying good property, but the transactions will be small as compared with the large ones of last year.

Worker Comp Changes Proposed.

The Council is scheduled to vote on a proposed change in the Carthage Personnel Policy Manual during its next regular meeting on February 22. In addition to clarifying several aspects of a work related injury and compensation for injured workers, the change would establish a procedure for "transitional duty."

"An employee who is injured as a result of a work-related accident and is unable to return to work immediately due to the medical restrictions placed upon him or her by a Worker’s Compensation physician may be assigned a transitional duty position until he or she is able to return to regular duty," the document states.

"The transitional duty assignment will be for a period not to exceed 90 days....At the end of the 90 days the City may choose to continue the transitional duty position,... or terminate the transitional duty position. At that time the Department Head may offer to another individual a full-time appointment ..... If a full-time replacement has been made, the employee on injury leave can only return to a vacant position and may not displace a full-time employee."

Missouri Older Worker Contest
Nominations Being Accepted.

news release

Nominations are being accepted for the 2000 Missouri Older Worker of the Year contest. This is an opportunity to recognize the valuable contribution that the older worker brings to today’s business.

The state is divided by regions based on Service Delivery Area’s to ensure statewide participation. Even though Local Committees select only one winner to compete in the state finals, this contest offers you the opportunity to recognize one or more of your outstanding senior employees. You may nominate the same person as last year and nominate more than one employees from your company. Current Title V and JTPA participants do not qualify.

Contestants must be 55 years of age or older and residents of Missouri. Candidates will be judged on their contributions to the company, additional or new skills learned, and how the employee serves as a role model for other company employees. Entries must be postmarked by February 29, 2000. The winner will be announced after the final vote.

The finalist from the southwest Missouri area will be announced at a special recognition event for nominees and their employers. Celebration activities for the state winner will include an expense paid trip to Jefferson City, a tour of the Capitol and meeting with elected officials.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

I’ve been hearin’ the faint rattle of fishin’ poles through the neighbor hood. The abnormally warm weather seems to have brought the fishin’ fever to a notch higher level.

‘Course those of us who don’t frequent the creek banks as often these days find other urges when the mild winter continues. Images of actually gettin’ that woodworkin’ project done or that last coat a paint on start poppin’ up. Even thoughts of actually usin’ the time to get the lawn mower tuned a little ‘fore the grass is growin’ full tilt. The idea of sittin’ on a warm day beside the pond has some appeal even for those not keen on the fishin.’ It is an excellent excuse for not doin’ all those chores that we know are comin’, once spring actually gets here.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Today I heard two rumors...number one was there is a snow storm on the way by Friday...hard to believe when I was preparing the garden and the other that a second bout of the flu is coming our way. I could do without either coming true, but I did cover my bulbs back up with the leaves I just removed. Now the immune system needs a little help if that flu rumor is true.

Preparing ahead of time is important. A couple of extra vitamin C and this is an appropriate time to begin with echinacea or your beta-1, 3-D-glucan or fo-Ti or Astragalus. All of which are reputed to bolster up the immune system....and if this flu is as bad or worse than the last, get Ready.

By now, you are probably familiar with echinacea and the above mentioned herbs, but what is this beta-1, 3-D-glucan? According to Leonid Ber, M.D., it consists of glucose units linked together. It is found in fungal cells and is also present in the cell walls of some budding yeasts. How does this apply to us? In research at the Baylor College of Medicine, it has been shown to induce immune response. From a purely observational point of view, I have noticed that those who are especially worn down respond very well to this substance. So if you have already been hit by the flu and may not have fully recuperated, it just might be time to get out the big guns. Fo-Ti is described as an adaptogenic herb which can help tonify the system and can often energize the weak.
