A grandmother was delighted to babysit her two very young grandsons. On the way to the park, she ran into a friend who looked at the two youngsters and said, "These must be your grandchildren. How old are they?"

The grandmother said, "The doctor is four, and the lawyer is two."

A man on safari lost his guide, and the native bearers ran away. Suddenly, he was surrounded by fierce-looking natives. Remembering a trick he’d seen once in a movie, he whipped out his cigarette lighter, flicked it, and pushed the flame toward the leader of the natives.

The leader jumped back and said, "It’s a miracle. I’ve never seen a lighter that worked the first time."

FACE BADLY SCALDED.

Mrs. C.P. Pence Victim of a Painful Accident.

Yesterday morning Mrs. Chas. Pence was badly scalded about the face, the result of an accident, at her home on South Garrison avenue.

She was making tea and had put some water on the stove to boil in a syrup can that was almost air tight. Just as the water reached the boiling point Mrs. Pence took the can off the stove and started to open it. Just as she did so the accumulated steam blew the lid off and burned her about the face and neck. Her eyes were almost miraculously saved but her face will in all probability be scarred by the burns.

Dr. Freed was summoned as soon as the accident happened and alleviated the pain as much as possible. Last night the patient was resting well and suffered little pain during the afternoon.

Housing and Annexation Policy Talks.

The Public Works will begin consideration of the formation of two policy issues during its regular meeting in City Hall tomorrow afternoon at 5:15. The discussion is scheduled to include how the City will approach various requests for support of housing developments, and what criteria should be followed for requests for annexation.

The typical approach for housing development in the recent past has been for the Council to give its blessing for any project presented to the City. The Council approval can influence what projects are granted special status by the State for tax incentives. The intent of the proposed policy discussion is to determine which type of projects would be of higher priority if several requests were presented in the same year.

The issue of whether the City should annex improved property that does not meet City standards such as waste water control was raised by Council member H.J. Johnson during a recent annexation hearing. As a member of the Public Works Committee, he requested the discussion to clarify future action on requests for annexation.

Mornin',

I know its a little late, but with the weekend I figured the annual valentine warnin’ might be forgotten if it was put out too early.

‘Course the reason behind these little reminders is for a friend who let the day slip by a few years ago and made the mistake of gettin’ a card to his wife the day after. He prob’ly doesn’t need the reminder any longer after the year of shame he suffered, but I figure his sacrifice should be remembered on a regular basis.

With the DAY fallin’ on a weekday this year, there fortunately will be plenty of time for those last minute dashes to remedy any forgetfulness. I’m sure the selection may be a little slim, but in this instance, it really is the though that counts most.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Q: I’m thinking about installing a tinted film on my windows, but several friends have urged me not to. They say it looks bad and is hard to remove. What do you say? - R. S.

A: Window film has improved over the years. You no longer need that mirror effect to deflect the summer sun. The stuff does come with some serious adhesive, so removal is still as frustrating as ever. You should not apply the film if you have double-glazed panes or if you are using storm windows, as the heat buildup can actually blow out the outer glass.

Super Hint: An old laminated countertop will dull after years of use and abuse. A good auto paste wax can give your countertop back its shine.

Dear Kelly: I love to refinish old furniture. I have learned a great way to keep the oils and grease on my hands from ruining a newly sanded piece.

It’s important, because the oils can make the finish or the stain splotchy if you aren’t careful. I keep a bucket of sawdust near my workbench, and I just stick my hand into the bucket before handling the piece. The sawdust absorbs oils from my skin. It’s also a great cleaner for sticky strippers. - T. S.

Super Hint: Shop compounds in cardboard boxes can turn into a rock because moisture gets to them through the thin cardboard. Put the whole box into a plastic bag and seal it.
