The old man was cleaning up in the branch bank at night when the phone rang. He answered, "Hello."

The voice at the other end said, "Can you tell me the penalty for withdrawing a five-year CD at the end of thirty-eight months?"

The old man said, "When I said, ‘Hello,’ I told you all I know about banking."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

ONLY WANTS $40,000.

A suit was filed in circuit court yesterday whereby Will Roberts by his next friend, Chas. M. Roberts, his father, asks for $5,000 actual and $5,000 exemplary damages against G.E. St. John, L.B. St. John and Ralph Wylie; also for $15,000 actual and $15,000 exemplary damages against Sheriff Warren and his bondsmen - a total of $40,000.

The suit arises from an incident which occurred last fall in which young Roberts was accused of stealing $15 from Ralph Wylie and was arrested and put through a sweating process to secure a confession. Roberts now wants damages to the extent of the above named amount.

Capt. J.F. Stephenson, of Kansas City, purchased a car load of mules of Henry Tangner yesterday and will ship them to Kansas City this evening.

Annexation Requests Considered.

The City Council will face a fairly full agenda for its regular meeting tomorrow evening in City Hall.

In final reading, the Council will consider:

The annexation request by G.M and Pat Lynch for property located at 2816 S. Maple.

The annexation request by Verla M. Helms for property located at 1327 Baker Boulevard.

Council bill 00-03 modifying current code prohibiting sales from parked vehicles.

Council bill 00-04 authorizing the Mayor to enter into a contract with D.M. Millin and Associates for reviewing the appraisal of land for a proposed airport.

The Council is also scheduled to hear the first readings of two bill authorizing contracts for construction. One is for the proposed multipurpose building to be built as part of the Fair Acres expansion project funded by a Steadley Fund grant. The other is for the extension of George Phelps Boulevard to River Street. Alumbaugh Construction submitted the low bid for the street construction.

Mornin',

I see where the major car manufacturers are gettin’ ready to go into production with the super gas mileage cars. They say they’ll get 70 to 80 miles per gallon.

The technology is combinin’ diesel engine with an electric motor and generator. Stuff ya read about in the 70’s in Popular Science. Even with relatively low fuel prices, bein’ able to go a thousand miles or so on a tank of gas has some appeal. Give ya some real leverage in shoppin’ for low prices at the pump.

A friend a mine’s dad would drive miles out of his way to save a few cents. Sometimes to the point of havin’ to buy a couple a bucks worth of gas to get back to the cheap station. With these new outfits, he could just carry an extra long extension cord.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Q: In an attic conversion, I was advised to use rigid foam insulation for the walls and probably the ceiling as well. Is there any need for a vapor barrier with such insulation? If so, where does it go? —M.T.

A: Some rigid foam panels have a foil facing, which is a vapor barrier. The foil side should face the new living-area space.

If that type of rigid foam panel isn’t available, you still need a vapor barrier. You can staple plastic sheeting to the studs before covering the framing with wallboard.

Q: A while back, somebody accidentally chipped a piece off my white kitchen sink. I never patched it, but now I would like to. How can I restore the sink to look new again? —C.P.

A: There are porcelain touch-up products available at most hardware and paint stores as well as major discount stores and home centers. The liquid comes in a small bottle with a brush in the cap. Standard sink and bath colors are available, so look for the brand name of your sink for the best match.

First get rid of the rust, then use the patch. Follow the label directions.

Q: The add-on plumbing in my new utility room calls for part of the water-supply lines to run underground. What grade of copper pipe do I need to use? — W.J.

A: First, check the local plumbing code to be sure what is specified there.

Probably, you can use Type K for the underground portion. For the rest, you could use Type L, but if there’s not that much pipe involved, you might as well use Type K for the whole job.
