The new mother is feeding the baby some strained fruit. Naturally, the food goes all over the infant. The father asks, "What are you doing?"
The mother answers, "I’m waiting to put on a second coat."

An orthopedist and a tree doctor met and started to discuss business. The orthopedist said, "Oh, by the way, yesterday one my patients ran into one of yours."

A young man went to a used-car dealer and asked to see a beat-up old jalopy. The salesman said, "Wouldn’t you rather see a new model?"
The boy answered, "Oh, no. With a jalopy, my folks won’t know whose fault the dents are."

BAD RUNAWAY YESTERDAY.

Yesterday afternoon J.P. Bishop, who lives west of town, was driving east on Third street and when in front of Keim & McMillan’s store his horse, which is a spirited one, and has a record, became frightened at a passing car, whirled around and started west, throwing Mr. Bishop out in front of R.H. Rose’s store. At the corner the frightened animal turned south and ran into a buggy belonging to C.W. Emery which Mrs. Emery had left standing in front of Price’s drug store, and broke the top and seat off of it. This did not stop the runaway nor was it stopped until the horse ran into an electric light pole on Fourth street on the north side of Thomas’ grocery store and fell on the sidewalk, narrowly missing several people who were standing near.

Mr. Bishop was not injured and his buggy was not damaged except one shaft broken.

Chamber/City Agreement.

Carthage Mayor Kenneth Johnson announced yesterday morning at a media conference in City Hall that the City will contract with the Chamber of Commerce for Economic Development activities.

The City Council voted during a closed session Tuesday evening to approve the proposal pending a final agreement between the current Economic Development Director Max McKnight and the Chamber. An ordinance authorizing the final agreement is expected for the next regular Council meeting on February 8.

If the agreement is given final approval, McKnight would be employed by the Chamber as the Executive Director. The Chamber would then submit a proposed economic development work plan and budget each year for Council approval. According to the Mayor, CW&EP will continue its monetary support of the Economic Development program.

McKnight, Bob Williams of CW&EP, and Chamber President Bob Copeland were also on during the announcement.

If approved, McKnight is scheduled to move to the Chamber the first of March.

Mornin',

City Council meetin’s bein’ somewhat informal, there is sometimes a little confusion among the audience about when they can speak up. There is a specific time allowed for citizens to address the Mayor and Council durin’ the meetin’ and it is fairly liberal in givin’ folks time to say what’s on their mind.

One gentleman addressed the Council on Tuesday about his concerns about a housin’ development proposed in his neighborhood. Although the Council took no action, he was afforded time for his position.

Later in the meetin’, the gentleman interjected a comment or two and upset the Mayor a tad. After a frank rebuttal for the interruption from the Mayor, and a firm "You’re out of order!" from the City Attorney, the spark fell quiet. Issues close to "my back yard" always stir emotions.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Click and Clack TALK CARS

by Tom and Ray Magliozz

Dear Tom and Ray:

We have a 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with 64,000 miles on it. With all of the ventilation controls off, the heat will suddenly come on. With the air conditioner on, it suddenly changes to heat when I step on the gas hard, and then returns to AC when I release the gas pedal. With the controls set for outside fresh air, it will change to heat on its own. Do you know why it’s doing this? - Euclid

RAY: Did you buy it used, Euclid? Maybe this car was originally from Anchorage, and it’s having withdrawal symptoms.

TOM: It’s a vacuum problem. All the ventilation controls and the heater control valve on this car are operated by vacuum. And the default position (i.e. when there’s no vacuum or very low vacuum) is "heat."

RAY: So when there’s not enough vacuum, the blend doors and the heater control valve will begin to open and allow heat in.

TOM: When you turn on the AC or the fresh-air vent, or turn the whole ventilation system off, engine vacuum is supposed to keep the valves and doors closed. But for some reason, the vacuum you’re getting is insufficient.

RAY: You may have a broken hose somewhere, or the control unit on the dash board may be faulty and may be creating a vacuum leak.

TOM: And the reason it gets worse when you step down hard on the gas is because that’s when the engine naturally produces the least vacuum. So if you suddenly need to climb a hill or pass somebody, you step on the gas, the engine vacuum decreases, the doors open, an voila! You get heat.

RAY: Have your mechanic look for a vacuum leak, Euclid. Finding it and fixing it should take the heat off the situation.
