today's laugh

A doctor walks over to his patient and says, "Congratulations, Mr. Smith. Our team of doctors think you’re well enough to see your bill."

It was so hot, a guy got into a cab and said, "The Yukon and step on it."

They now have nonalcoholic wine. The only trouble is that cops can stop you for nondrunk driving.

The grass is greener on the other side of the fence, but I’d hate to have his water bill.

A $95,000 MINING DEAL.

A $95,000 mining deal, which is only a part of a series of still larger transactions yet to come, was consummated in Carthage yesterday afternoon in Thomas & Hackney’s office, between an Eastern company and Carterville parties. Two separate mining properties were included in the deal, as follows: The "Belle C." mine and mill with a sublease of five lots, located on the Cornfield lease south of Carterville, brought $50,000. The company selling was composed of A.A. Cass, Walter W. Cass, A.F. Carmean, A.A. Antler and George Warren.

The other property was the "Gray Goose" mine and mill with a sublease of four lots, located on the N.E. Perry lease a mile southeast of Carterville. The consideration for this was $45,000. The company was composed of A.A. Cass, M.V. James, G.H. Schoenbern, Thos. McCrosky and Frank Hazlett.

County Food Fight Spreads to City.

The County Commission heard more opinions about the proposed Jasper County Food Service Sanitation Ordinance during the regular Thursday morning meeting yesterday in the Courthouse.

Uncertainty about the role played by the City of Carthage Codes officials in the scripting of the proposal brought conflicting statements from two City Council members in attendance.

Council member Lujene Clark expressed her displeasure at the involvement of City staff.

"As a City Council person I would like to tell you this never came before our City council," said Clark. "People who appeared before you, in the form of City employees, were never authorized by the City of Carthage to speak for the City of Carthage, nor are they in any manner authorized, or have they been authorized by the City Council to represent that they have the authority to set policy for the City. We will handle that across the street, I will assure you.

"If there are questions as to what happens in the City of Carthage, I’m sure you can contact Mayor Johnson rather than an employee. Or, (City Administrator) Mr. Short, who has also been duly authorized and can bring things to the attention of the Mayor and Council. I encourage you not to vote on the ordinance until you get our official reaction."

After several other opinions were given by individuals, Council member H.J. Johnson responded to Clark’s assessment.

"Although I agree with Lujene that staff, either County staff or City staff is not a policy making body," Johnson stated, "I would encourage the County anytime they can use the expertise of any of the City employees to feel free to contact them. With the understanding that they are an employee and do not set policy. But I don’t want you, from my viewpoint, to get the feeling that the City is not willing to work with your departments and between departments anytime you might need that expertise. We hope we can also use yours. We hope the same thing comes from your side. That’s all."

Carthage Director of Engineering Joe Butler also spoke to the group. Butler supervises the Codes Inspectors.

"We appreciate the opportunity to preview your draft ordinance," said Butler, "to make sure there are no conflicts with existing City ordinances. We had very little input, but we appreciate you guys inviting us to a meeting and asking us for input. We were not trying to set City policy. Anything that was done would have to be run by the City."

artCamp Is Just Around The Corner!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

We hope everyone is enjoying their summer despite the heat !! We heard Mudstock 2000 was a messy, muddy fun-filled afternoon last Saturday. There were a number of very artistic kids who took advantage of the artCentral tent and spent some time playing with clay....a bit cleaner but mud just the same !!

For those who left their clay masterpieces to be kiln fired......hang in there !! Tom will have to let them all dry thoroughly before he can fire them so give him at least until the 22nd...OK ? Great.

Also...keep in mind that sometimes clay objects blow up when fired !! It happens all the time and there isn’t a thing anyone can do about it. Just cross your fingers!!

We thank Tom for his help in representing us at what we all hope will become a Carthage tradition !! For those who read in our newsletter about an opening here on July 25th....well that’s not right !! The opening is on August 25th !!! Do you suppose we could call that a typo ??

Some great news !! Local sculptor and artCentral member, Bill Snow has taken on a stone carving project of mammoth proportions !! He has been commissioned to carve 6 identical limestone capitals !! ( those are the fancy tops on columns !! ) Each one weighs about 2000 pounds !! Not something you can just order from a home decor catalog !! This is a project where there are no instructions, no books to tell how to do it.......he is truly a master of his art !! This type of a commission is a once in a lifetime happening. Way to go, Bill !!

artCamp is about to happen !! We have a number of classes that are already full BUT there are lots of classes still open !! We will be signing up kids until the very last minute !! So far we have filled over 95 spots with 22 kids! These kids are in for the best summer fun ever! Well, maybe, next to swimming!!

Don’t forget to get your kids registered for artCamp 2000 !! Twelve days filled with FUN !!! Twelve dollars per day, per student. Some of the classes are a full 2 days to be able to complete the project so keep that in mind when signing up !! We have left some registration forms with class information on the front door for your convenience!!

More.......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations. Our hours are Tues. - Sat. 9am - 3pm.

Mornin',

I suppose it took more than a little convincin’ ta get folks ta give up on the horse and buggy. More than anything it was prob’ly the idea of bein’ comfortable with a known mode of gettin’ from here to there.

Automobiles aren’t entirely the blessin’ that proponents of that industry would have liked ever’one to believe, but they did offer a lot of advantages.

The one thing that changed the most was the amount of time folks spend just walkin’. Nowadays, a visit to a neighbor on the other side of the block warrants takin’ the car.

‘Course one of the big advantages of car ownin’ is ya don’t have ta clean out the stall. Another is if ya leave the car in the garage, you don’t have ta keep puttin’ in fuel just so ya have somethin’ ta clean up later. And the flies aren’t near as plentiful.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Update: the burn that I suffered on July 3rd is practically healed. I can only attribute it to the consistent use of emu oil and Vit. E. The burn on my stomach is completely healed with only a slight purple discoloration.

A couple of things about the emu oil: a little goes a LONG way and since it is a carrier oil the skin should be cleaned of any substance that one does not want to be absorbed.
