Did Ya Know?
. . .CW&EP’s Water Treatment Plant personnel will begin annual clearing of the utility’s water holding and softening basin on Monday, July 10th and expect completion by the end of the week. Customers may notice a slightly different taste due to unsoftened water being delivered to the distribution system. This should return to normal after the cleaning operation is completed.

today's laugh

A surgeon, an architect, and a politician were arguing as to whose profession was the oldest.
Said the surgeon: "Eve was made from Adam’s rib, and that surely was a surgical operation."
"Maybe," said the architect, "but prior to that, order was created out of chaos, and that was an architectural job."
"But," interrupted the politician, "somebody created the chaos first!"

Ego-The only thing that can keep growing without nourishment.

"Dad, what is a traitor in politics?"
"A traitor is one who leaves our party and goes over to the other one."
"Well, then, what is a man who leaves his party and comes over to yours?"
"A convert, my son."

Rest Room Question Still Unanswered.

The City Council Public Services Committee held its regular monthly meeting last Monday evening.

Main Street Carthage President Sue Vandergriff attended the meeting to monitor progress on the question of opening City Hall rest rooms for special events. City Administrator Tom Short reported that he had not received any information as yet about reported problems with the sewer system. The Committee is awaiting the information before making any recommendations to the Council.

The Committee also discussed the Council’s decision to stop making Memorial Hall available as a storm shelter after October 1, 2000. The Committee oversees the operation of all City buildings, including the Hall and had earlier recommended the action to the Council. The possibility of using volunteers from the American Red Cross to supervise the use of the basement of the Hall during storm warnings had been discussed during a Public Safety meeting. There were no representatives from that group or other citizens wishing to speak about the subject and the Committee took no action.

Sculpture Session Expanding!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Things are going along smoothly these days. After getting the Membership Show up and getting past the opening we have some really nice and deserved cruising time!!

Our next official show and opening won’t be until August 25th. David Matthews and Amanda Twheat from Kansas City will show their oil paintings and drawings.

But.....we are thinking about having a short exhibit of Katherine Hyde’s paintings!! Wouldn’t that be exciting!! It would be perfect for the summer considering her subject matter usually focuses on sunny breaches and tropical seas!!

The plan is to have her paintings on exhibit August 1 through August 18. Not a very long show but for sure a fun one!!

The weekly sculpture group has started a new session. We have had a few people who want to join the fun so we are expanding it into the drawing session time slot!!

There is more room in drawing as it’s in the larger classroom so we will add a few who want to do sculpture. It’s also an easier time for people with busy families. So...... sculpture sessions are now 3-5 and 6:30-8:30 every Thursday!!

Next week...the person who writes for this space will be on vacation so...instead of the hassle of writing two columns now it was decided to go over the artCamp schedule, OK? Thanks......

Don’t forget to get your kids registered for artCamp 2000!!! Twelve days filled with FUN!!! Twelve dollars per day, per student. Some of the classes are a full 2 days to be able to complete the project so keep that in mind when signing up!! We have left some registration forms with class information on the front door for your convenience!!

More......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E. 13th & www.ozarkartistscolony.com under organizations. Our hours are Tues.-Sat. 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

I saw the other day that several of the larger cities in California have outlawed wood burning fireplaces. Too much smoke.

‘Course car manufacturers have complained for years that one fireplace puts out more pollutants that a thousand or so automobiles. Guess someone actually started payin’ attention.

Since homes with existin’ fireplaces are exempt, maybe there will be a real premium on older homes. The price a fire wood could go down, after a while, and there may be some real advances in the development of more realistic gas fireplace logs.

I suppose the campers will be next. Bring your gas grill and roast your buns. Rubbin’ two sticks together may become the next felony.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

Yep, we’re in July. The south breeze just did not come up to cool off the night for good sleeping so I turned on the T.V. just to see what was going on. As luck would have it, I caught a program regarding the use of dietary supplements. There were two gentlemen(?) on this program who were authorities in their respective fields. One representing the old views of some medical communities regarding the use of herbs and the lack of their regulation and the harm that they can do to people who have no idea what they do. He was advocating more rules be set in place by another "bureau" or the FDA pull the supplements. The other man was representing the side of availability and labels for restrictions via the natural foods industry and using the rules already in place...I’ve seen these programs many times and have made my own personal decisions regarding the entire issue, so this was just another show until I became so aware of the actions and presentation of each persons view.

If actions do speak louder than words, the gentleman who was advocating the old ways, was quite aggravated and angry, not open to discussion and certainly angry to get his point across by slinging around many half truths and yelling, while the other gentleman was quietly responding and making good points. I think I would rather have a cup of unregulated chamomile tea and listen and respond with an open mind, than be so hostile I looked like I was going to explode (and probably felt like it too!) Just an observation, but one I found rather humorous. Guess you had to be there!

What is CLA? CLA is short for conjugated Linolcic Acid. CLA is a free fatty acid necessary for growth and one of the building blocks of cell membranes and communication signals within and between cells. CLA has been linked to the way the body stores and burns energy. It helps your food perform more efficiently and it helps focus calories onto healthy muscle tissue. Scientists at the University of Wisconsin believe we are absorbing almost no CLA from the food sources. Some benefits from CLA may include reduction of body fat, tone and promote muscle growth.
