I saw in the paper last night a man went thirty-eight days without food. He really should have ordered from another waiter.

Everybody you know can make you happy — some by arriving and some by leaving.

A seven-year-old came home from school a bit teary-eyed one afternoon. He told his mother, "Agnes broke off our engagement. She returned my frog."

A tourist saw his first country windmill and asked the farmer what it was. The farmer said, "It’s an electric fan for blowing the flies off my cows."

WORK RESUMED AT CHOLWELL.

Pumping Began this Week—Cleaning
Up This Valuable Property.

Work is going on this week again at the Cholwell mines in the southeastern edge of the city. The company owning the land served an ultimatum recently on the Southeastern company, who have the lease to the effect that they must go to work in earnest very soon. Accordingly, Harry Cornell, as manager of the company, started the pumps up Saturday and has kept them going ever since.

"We are simply getting the water out of the ground so far," said Mr. Cornell to a reporter, this morning; "but we are going to have a good camp out there. It is good ground and we are now going to develop it in earnest. I believe we can make it one of the best pieces of property in the county. We are doing fine work at the Pleasant Valley mines, I can tell you."

Parking Ticket Review.

There were 2,933 parking tickets issued by the Carthage Police Department in 1999. The total dollars, $7,548 last year, generated by those tickets has traditionally does not cover the expense of issuing the tickets. As with all aspects of police activities, the purpose is not to generate revenue, but to assure compliance with City ordinances.

The primary area monitored by the Parking Control Officer is the downtown area. The Square and surrounding area street parking is designated as two hour parking. Of the tickets issued, 2,267 were one dollar tickets for violation of this two hour restriction. If a vehicle receives more than four one dollar tickets within a 30 day period, the cost per violation jumps to ten dollars. There were 183 ten dollar parking tickets issued in 1999.

Parking with a front or rear wheel over the line results in a five dollar ticket. There were 454 of these issued. Parking in a handicap zone with out authorization resulted in 5 tickets issued for twenty-five dollars. One ticket for forty-five dollars was issued due to late payment of a handicap parking violation. There were 23 fifteen dollar tickets for parking too near a fire hydrant.

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Lots and lots going on around here !! We’re happy to say that we finally got the display window at Main Street Mercantile set up with some of our member’s artwork. Works displayed right now include Bill Snow, Penny Wilkinson, Debbie Reed, Richard Foshay, Katherine Hyde, LeeAnn and Jack Sours, Sam Butcher, Jorge Leyva and our Geranium House print by Jerry Ellis !! As time goes on and we get more accustomed to working in a window we hope our display will get better each time we rearrange it !! We thank Mike for his generosity !! This is a really nice thing he’s doing for artCentral!!

Cookbooks are now being sold inside Main Street Mercantile and we thank Mike for helping with those, too !! For general info....the cookbooks are selling for 15.00 but if you buy 6 or more the cost is reduced A LOT !!

This Friday, Saturday and half the day Sunday Bill Snow is holding his second annual stone carving weekend at the Blue Parrot Studio in Alba. There are about 16 participants including 4 art-Central members !! It promises to be an exciting weekend with lots of noise, stone chips and dust flying !!

We are very excited about all of the new members we have acquired lately !!! It’s truly amazing how many people have joined us and once we get to visiting with them we find out it’s really a small world. There are number of things we all share besides a love of art !! Lately it’s been that we all know some of the same people and a lot have gone to MSSC at one time or another.

Our pottery room is coming along nicely. We expect the new wheels any day now !! One of our newest members spent six hours here on Wednesday volunteering to help with the glazing chemicals that needed to be put into safe storage containers. We thank her for all of her time and energy !!!

Coming up next will be our Annual Membership Show !! Each year we have had a wonderful turn out as well as a grand time at the reception !! It is really worth your time to come by and share in the fun !!

This year we have at least 25 members participating featuring artwork in med-iums like watercolor, oil, pastel, stone, ceramic, hand woven textiles, metal, mixed media, acrylic, photography and printmaking !! Mornin',

I’ve heard several times that of all the activities that police are involved with, parkin’ tickets cause ‘em the most grief. Otherwise mild mannered folks will become downright indignant when it comes to payin’ a five dollar parkin’ ticket. Some will become obnoxious over the common buck variety.

I see there is an ongoin’ battle by our neighbors to the west over who has the authority to issue tickets and how the money is spent. We put that responsibility with the Police Department and limit our battles to the right to use a particular piece of turf.

I suppose durin’ hot days back ‘fore air conditionin’ there were battles over particular park benches in the shade on the square. No sittin’ meters were installed, folks just worked on the first come, first sit game plan. Sleepin’ was prob’ly optional.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

When asked about a child’s needs for essential fatty acids (EFAs), Dr. Leo Galland, M. D. author of Superimmunity for Kids stated:

Essential fatty acids are critical in newborns, young infants and toddlers. Human breast milk is the best source of omega 3 and omega 6 for infants. Nursing mothers should supplement their diet with 1 to 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily. If you choose not to be breast-feed, try adding 5 to 10 drops of flaxseed oil & 1 drop of vit. E per bottle of infant formula.

Be sure to test for allergic reaction by rubbing a small amount under child’s arm....if it turns red and irritated, don’t use it.

About half way through weaning, begin to supplement flax oil. When your child becomes a toddler, she should receive a teaspoon of flaxseed oil a day. Adolescents should receive a tablespoon a day."

When the Dr. began to supplement flax seed oil, he observed that most children showed an improvement in the skin and hair. Eczema often improved as did symptoms like bed-wetting, hyperactivity and chronic ear and respiratory infections.

Dr. Galland is also a firm believer in using flax seed oil as a preventative to inflammatory disorders. Large amounts taken to reduce inflammation of arthritis and colitis may have been prevented by daily consumption.
