"Jack is some composer, isn’t he?"
"No, he don’t compose, he just draws lines on fly paper and then plays it."

A district railroad superintendent always made a special point of insisting that all station masters send in an immediate report of any accident, no matter how small it might be.
One morning he got a message: "Man fell from station platform in front of moving train. Details later." He sweated it out for good until he got the second message which read: "Everything okay, nobody hurt. . .engine going backwards."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Administrator of the Fox Estate.

Judge W. H. Waters filed his bond of $10,000 this morning as administrator of the estate of Daniel Fox, of Alba, who died March 24. The estate amounts to $1,200 personal property and 700 acres of land. An unknown quantity in the form of mining royalties coming to the estate made it necessary to place the bond so high. Mrs. Fox and the other heirs waived the right to administer and joined in requesting that Judge Waters be appointed.

M. F. Thomas who has been a conductor on the Electric line long enough to be called a "pioneer," has secured a thirty day lay off on account of ill health, and will leave tomorrow for Eureka Springs to rest and recuperate.

Bid Changes Stall Traffic Signals.

The City Council Public Works Committee will submit bids for a new traffic signal and intersection improvements at Chestnut and Garrison to the full Council without recommendation at next Tuesday’s regular Council meeting. A motion by member Charlie Bastin to reject both of the bids submitted for the project drew a 2-2 vote from the Committee.

The project is included in the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2000/2001 for approximately $100,000. Bids were substantially higher than expected. The low bid from APAC was $155,324 and G&G Construction bid the job at $187,640.

Engineering Department Director Joe Butler told the Committee that after seeing how high the bids were, work that could be completed by the City Street Department and CW&EP, and minor design changes were taken out. The resulting negotiated price from APAC was $124,000. The same specs were than shown to G&G with a resulting bid from them of $116,917. Butler recommended the final low bid. Committee Chair Bill Fortune and Bastin wanted to rebid the job with new specs. McPheeters and Johnson voted no.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

Sometimes I just don’t get it.

On occasion over the last several years that I’ve been puttin’ thoughts down ever’ day in this column, someone will ask me exactly what that Jake was supposed ta mean. Usually they have an interpretation that I hadn’t even considered. Usually their twist is more interestin’ than anything I could come up with. Sometimes they are the catalyst for another Jake or two if I’m lucky.

‘Course the mistake some make is takin’ the ramblin’s in this column a little too serious. That happens ever’ now and then when an amateur attempts ta find some humor in a particular situation.

My suggestion is, if ya read a Jake ya don’t understand, call one of the sponsors ya see here. At least let ‘em know you appreciate them makin’ this confusion possible.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

I finally figured out what is wrong with the weather....there is no interaction with kids and their weather games. If it had been raining on our summer for this many days we would have been out in it holding hands and going in a circle saying, "rain rain go away come again another day!" Suppose some kids are just happy that it is raining so there is no chance they will be sent outside to play instead of sitting in front of their computers.

What are your kids doing this summer? If you don’t have a garden space to teach the food growing process, try teaching the children to grow and care for their own sprouts. It is a fun, quick rewarding process and they can eat their results and have the fulfillment of contributing to the family meals. You can purchase seeds and lids which fit over regular fruit jars at your health food store and make it an easy process. Alfalfa sprouts are very mild and excellent added to any salad or sandwich. There are broccoli and mustard, the five flavor mix and more. One must make SURE to use sprouts especially for sprouting and eating. NO treated seeds, and be sure to keep the sprouts rinsed and clean.

Eating raw foods is especially beneficial as they contain enzymes which we do not get from cooked foods. If you are one who gets upset stomach or colon from roughage, it is possible to add an enzyme especially for plant fibers as one does of they cannot drink milk or eat beans without getting gas. If you have been without truly fresh foods for some time, start slowly and work your way up. When one is bettering the diet, sometimes when the "stuck" stuff and less healthy cells are sluffed and replaced with healthier ones, a person may feel a little uncomfortable for a few days, but it is worth it. Kind of like climbing Mt. Everest, the going is not easy, but the view from the top must be incredible!
