"Is a chicken big enough to eat when it’s two weeks old?"
"Of course not!"
"Then how does it manage to live?"

"Say, Joe, you’re a broker; can’t you give me a tip?"
"I know something that is now about twenty, and within six months I can guarantee it to be over ninety."
"Sounds fine! What is it?"
"The temperature."

TO REBUILD THE RACE TRACK.

T.M. Gatlin, of one and a half miles west of town, took the contract this morning for re-soiling and grading the half mile track at the Market fair grounds. He takes the contract for $500 even money. He is to re-soil both ends of the track, plow up the whole track and roll it well, and put it in first class shape in every respect. He will put what is called a mop board around the inside of the track all the way, which will keep the surface of the track from washing. Frank Haven will oversee the work, and will have it done right. He not only knows what a good track is, but has occasion to use this track a good deal all during the summer and is especially interested in having it a good one.

Mr. Gatlin said this morning, "I intend to make this one of the best and fastest tracks in the southwest. I have not only had much experience in grading work in general, but I have often graded and fitted up racing tracks and once made an entirely new track."

Mornin',

The Budget/Ways and Means Committee has shaved the requests for funding down to the point that there will be a little over $200,000 left above the $1.8 million in reserves. There may be some other adjustments durin’ next Thursday’s scheduled meetin’. CW&EP is scheduled to sit down and go over their proposed budget at that meetin’ also.

The Council is scheduled to see the final recommendation by the second Tuesday in June. Approval of the perfected document is scheduled for the regular Council meet on the fourth Tuesday in June, ready for the beginnin’ of the fiscal year 2000/2001 on July 1. No big changes this year. The proposed new buildin’ for the Parks Department, a couple a new fire trucks, and replacin’ the Street Department shop were big ticket items.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell and Kelly Carrell

Dear Al: I always start off each growing season with sharp shovels and hoes. You wouldn’t believe how much faster you can chop down weeds or dig a hole for a tree when you have a sharp tool. It takes about 10 minutes to sharpen each tool, and it usually lasts me a whole season.

Sharpening a shovel also takes the strain off its handle, since you don’t have to put so much weight behind it when you’re using it. - M.K.

Q. I have 4-inch ceramic tiles around my kitchen sink and on my counter tops. The filler between the tiles has worn down in some spots, and it looks bad when it is dirty. Is there a way to fill in these bad spots? - G.P.

A: The filler between the tiles themselves - the grout - is available in a ready mix or powder form.

The filler between the sink and the tiles is usually caulk. Get a caulk specified for use on tubs or sinks. Since the caulk has some flexibility, it can better handle the problems of expansion and contraction between the two different materials, tile and sink.

Remove the old grout and fill the joints with the right color of new grout, and use the caulk where it is needed.

A SUPER HINT - Instead of mowing over your lawn sprinkler heads or trying to edge around them, use a tin can. Empty the can, and clean it out. Place it, open-side down, over the sprinkler head and push down. The can will cut right through the grass, and you can pull the sod right up.
