Mrs. Hayes Herrin Dead.

Just at midnight last night Mrs. Byrde Herrin, wife of Hayes Herrin, breathed her last at her home on the corner of Vine street and Garrison avenue, after an illness of only a few days.

Just a week ago Mrs. Herrin was taken ill with malarial fever which threatened to develop into typhoid. No alarm was felt as to her condition, until late last night, when symptoms of heart trouble suddenly developed, and she died within two hours. In addition to her bereaved husband she leaves two motherless children, Hazel, aged 4 years, and Joe aged eight months.

The body was taken to the residence of Mr. Herrin’s parents in Cassil Place this morning, where the funeral will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, conducted by Rev. A. J. Van Wagner. The interment will be in Park cemetery. She was a member of the Carthage High School; she, as well as her husband, having been a member of the class of ‘90.

Scheduled Council Business.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on an ordinance that would allow police personnel to live within fifteen miles of the station during tomorrow evening’s regular meeting in City Hall. Currently officers must live in an area that is serviced by a Carthage telephone prefix. The change has been recommended by the Public Safety Committee as a way to expand the options for new personnel.

A vote is also scheduled for the final payment for services for negotiations to acquire property for airport property. The contract would authorize payment to Joyce Liggett in the amount of $2,270 for a retainer and $2,730 for a signed contract obtained. The contract was contingent upon two other parcels of property being purchased and was not executed by the City, but payment to Liggett was not contingent upon the contract being consummated.

The Council agenda also includes a bill authorizing an agreement with Sprouls Construction for storm water ditch improvements near River Street, an agreement with Murray Construction for finish work on the new softball fields.

Mornin',

I suppose one a the clues that the years are creepin’ up on ya is the number of grandma’s at the family Thanksgivin’ gatherin’.

‘Course ya have most ever’one there that at some time or another reference "grandma" as if she was the only one. When the kids go walkin’ through the room callin’ for grandma, nearly ever conversation comes to a halt. Heads turn and stretch to see which kid the grandma belongs to.

I’d guess this is onea the reasons the some families adopt different pet names for different sets of grandparents. It could keep the confusion down in a crowd, but my family seems to keep the traditional generic terms for their elders. The kids like the attention, and the grandma’s too.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Q: I want to use a latex paint over an oil-based paint but was told it wouldn’t work. Why? Is there another way, or do I have to use oil-based paint? - H. J.

A: I think the reason people mistakenly warn against putting latex over oil-based paint is because of the old "water and oil don’t mix" adage.

After the paint is dry, it’s perfectly all right to use latex over oil, or vice versa. You do want to make sure that the old paint is clean and without any gloss and that the surface is completely sound. Talk with your paint dealer to be sure you’re using the proper paint for the project.

Q: I want to add an electrical outlet on my patio. Should I install a GFI? - J. B.

A: Most local electrical codes require that you employ ground-fault interrupters any place where water and electricity might mix. Even if it’s not required, it should be. So, yes, use a GFI on your patio.

Super Hint - Sometimes a tiny dowel can hold a joint better than a screw. Drill a tiny hole and install a toothpick along with glue to hold a joint fast.

Super Hint - If using pre-pasted wallpaper and you don’t have a water tray, try wetting the paper in a large ice chest. Make sure it is large enough to hold the water and wide enough to accommodate the paper.

Benefits: The water will stay warm longer, and ice chests are relatively easy to clean.
