Slapped the Mayor’s Son.

A scissors grinder named Simon was fined $10 and costs in police court this afternoon at 2 o’clock for slapping Mayor Ross’ six-year-old son, Herman.

The little boy was standing around watching the man grinding knives in the street. Simon concluded the boy was in his way and slapped him and sent him home. The court concluded from the evidence that the man had far exceeded his rights and authority and gave him a fine to pay for assaulting the boy.

Two Springfield men named Jule Armstrong and Jim Jones were arrested yesterday charged with being drunk and reeling on the street and using highly offensive language.

In police court this morning they pleaded guilty to drunkenness and were each fined $9 including costs. They were well dressed men and paid their fines.

Memorial Hall Grant.

The Public Services Committee voted 4-0 to recommend that the full Council accept a grant from the Missouri Veterans Commission in the amount of $370,319. The funds would come in the form of a 50/50 matching grant for renovations to Memorial Hall.

The Council appropriated $404,703 in this year’s budget anticipating the grant, but specific details will still need to be approved before any work can commence.

General plans submitted as part of the grant request include an elevator and $220,000 of improvements to the basement. Also included is a new metal roof, a new entrance at the southeast corner of the building, and new glass for the east entrance. Approximately $80,000 in heating/air conditioning rework is planned.

The grant is specifically designed to assist in projects that benefit or memorialize veterans. The American Legion currently uses a portion of the second floor as a meeting hall. Due to restrictions on the grant, the funds will not be used for improvements to the interior of the main auditorium. Approximately $210,000 is earmarked for architectural elements in other parts of the building.

Mornin',

Timing is everything.

A couple a years ago the City started lookin’ at improvements that could be made to Memorial Hall. The Boylan Foundation funded an architect to come in and put together some general plans for improvements. The result of several weeks of meetin’s and discussion of the role of the Hall by a Committee appointed by the Mayor was a plan with a price tag of just under $2 million. Needless to say, the money wasn’t in the budget. Those plans however, were exactly what was needed when the opportunity for the grant from the Missouri Veterans Commission came along. We just happened to have a ready made plan for exactly what they were lookin’ for. And some cash.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman.

by Al Carrell and Kelly Carrell

Dear Kelly: My screens probably needed to be replaced this season, but I just haven’t had the time or the money to do it. Several areas had small holes, and I patched them myself. Since the screens were fiderglass, I cut out the patches, placed them over the holes and covered them with foil. Then I used a hot iron to "weld" them into place. Up close and personal, they don’t look that great, but at least I can get through another season without replacing them.

You can increase your workshop storage space if you have exposed wall studs. If you are going to hang pegboard- and you should because it is so handy-hinge it on one side instead of just screwing it to the wall

That lets you do two things. You can hang tools on hooks or nails inside the cavity behind the pegboard and also hang items on both sides of the pegboard. That way you get more than twice the storage space of a normal pegboard setup.

If you add a lock, you’ll have a little bit of added securty for the tools locked inside.

SUPERHINT- If you are looking for a way to make wood just slide over your metal tool table, try sprinkling a little bady powder on the table before using it.

The powder adds just enough lubrication, and it won’t mar the wood like a wax or oil might.
