"I didn’t sleep a wink last night...this fly kept sitting on my nose."
"Why didn’t you brush him off?"
"I didn’t know he was dusty."

"What’s better than a broken drum?"
"I don’t know; what?"
"Nothing. It can’t be beat."

"Did you ever notice that he closes his eyes when he plays?"
"Yes, he’s so kind-hearted he doesn’t want to see us suffer."

ELKS’ BUILDING COMMENCED.

Lewis Mallory Has Excavation Nearly Finished Already.

The work of constructing the Carthage Elks’ club house has at last begun, and Lewis Mallory has the excavation nearly complete.

The building will front south on Sixth street, between Main and Grant. It sits back about 20 feet from the sidewalk, and runs halfway through to Fifth street.

W. R. Logan and R. W. Jay, the stone men figuring on furnishing the foundation material, are both Elks, and a slight delay has been occasioned by the determination of each of them to be more liberal than the other in the manner of a donation on the contract piece.

As soon as the honor of furnishing the stone is adjusted, the foundation work will be pushed.

Mornin',

Another year down and not even a good snow this winter to show for it. I’m guessin’ that last December’s snow fall will balance out the average for a few years ta come.

The year has been fairly calm in City politics, with the most notable event bein’ the construction of several new business sites on the south part a town. Many are bein’ occupied with a good number still available. The Myers Park Development is sold out along Grand Avenue.

The girls softball fields will need a little finishin’ off yet, but for the most part are completed. 2001 is prob’ly the first year in the last ten or so that some discussion of an airport wasn’t on the front page on a regular basis. Maybe next year it’ll hit again.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell & Kelly Carrell

Dear Al: My old hammer handle split, so I decided to replace it rather than buy a new hammer. I have a little trick that I use when I’m doing a project like this. First I place the new wooden handle into the oven and heat it for 10 to 15 minutes. That dries out the wood so that it shrinks just a little bit.

When I replace the hammer head and the shims, I use a little oil on the wood. The oil plus the moisture in the air will cause the wood to swell just a little and take up any slack there might have been in the new fit.

A SUPER HINT- Clean a dirty butcher block with a paste made of lemon juice and baking soda. Apply the paste on stains, and let it sit overnight. Then rub the paste into the butcher block, and you should have a really clean work surface again.

One common mistake during a drywall repair is not getting it flat enough. Often it’s hard to take off enough compound to make it smooth without revealing the repair. One way to get a smooth, flat look is to rake a ruler over the patch before it dries. The professionals have large trowels for that job, but we can use a stiff ruler. Another way to save some time is to smooth over the patch with a damp sponge, to remove some of the compound. Either technique can cut way down on your sanding time after the compound has dried.
