First Pelican- Pretty good fish you have there.
Second Pelican- Well, it fills the bill.

Waiter, just look at this piece of chicken; it is nothing but skin and bones.
Yes, sir. D’you want the feathers, too?

A Tasteful Bachelor’s Den.

Jimmie Rainwater’s bachelor quarters are fitted up in a manner to fill the average tenant bachelor with envy, and the favored few who are permitted to enter the charming portals report it the coziest and most ornamental place in town. He is always adding to his treasure and yesterday received a shipment of imported stuffs, recently ordered.

In the lot is a pair of genuine camel hair blankets, a camel’s hair pillow which not only has a camel’s hair case but is stuffed with that material.

He also received a fine woolen Scotch plaid shawl, manufactured at Stuttgart, Germany. Each side of it is a different pattern, one side being the Macpherson plaid and the Logan, both well known Scotch clans. Two Navajo Indian rugs are also recent acquisitions to the many novelties which abound in Mr. Rainwater’s typical bachelor quarters.

The Change That Changed Lives.

by Emilio Fentanes,
Carthage Junior High Student Council President

The Carthage Junior High had a Penny Wars from November 26 to December 3. The purpose of the war was to raise money to buy presents for the kids in our community whose parents cannot afford to buy gifts. The penny wars are a competition between grades for who can raise the most money in one week. The grade that raises the most money receives an assembly.

Penny wars have a few rules. All the quarters, nickels, and dimes are negative points. All the bills, checks, and pennies are positive points.

At the end of the week the grade with the most positive points wins. Penny Wars however have proven more than one thing, it has prove teenagers are able to make a difference.

"As teenagers, we are not only able to raise large quantities of money, but we are able to make a difference in a kid’s life," says Emilio Fentanes, President of the Student Council.

All the money goes to the Police Christmas Party. Not only are students involved, but many teachers also help. This year there were at least four teachers helping each grade raise money. This year was one of the few years that every grade was excited about the cause.

During the week there were dialogues with characters including Matt Foley, and Harry Caray played by the president of the student council over the intercom to motivate students to give money. Not only did the president set challenges but also the teachers set interesting challenges to motivate the kids to give money.

The Penny Wars this year were very interesting and close. The ninth grade beat the seventh grade by a difference of $12.00. The grand total for this year was $2,715.96. This year’s goal, however, was to raise $3,000. The difference between the goal and the amount raised was only $284.04. Unlike any other thing there were bad things happening. On the night of November 29, a thief broke into one of the teacher’s room and took $200 out of the amount that a teacher collected that day.

However, instead of being upset by the incident the students felt more motivated and gave more money to the cause. Students at home talked about the incident, and one student’s parents donated the $200 to the cause. Students took the crisis and turned it into a great success.

The students at the Carthage Junior High are not only an example of great citizens, but are an example of future world leaders. Thank you, students, for your efforts and acts of kindness.

Mornin',

Nothin’ like temperatures in the 50’s for a Christmas parade. The event drew a good sized crowd to fill the square and enjoy the festivities.

Communities around the area are havin’ parades through the week, so if ya missed the one in Carthage, you still have a chance to see Santa and get him your list.

With the official kick-off the season, the focus now will be gettin’ through the 25th without lettin’ the stress get the best of ya. Lots a extra activities and only three weeks ‘till Christmas.

‘Course there is still that chance of a little snow comin’ in to add to the spirit of the holiday. Better make hay while the sun’s shinnin’ and get those last minute gifts outa the way. Shoppin’ season is open.

This is some fact, but mostly,
