INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Going to Soldiers’ Home.

R. A. Rreeze leaves tomorrow for the soldiers’ home at Leavenworth, where he will likely spend the remaining winter taking treatment for rheumatism, and also be with his brother-in-law, J. Copple, who is at the home and is soon to undergo a serious surgical operation.

Extra Force at Ramsay’s.

Five young ladies were added to the store force at Ramsay’s this morning to help out with sales. Most of them are employed in the toy department in the basement. They are Misses Maxwell Fulford, Clara Bliss, Mattie Edwards and Ada Augustine.

The Belgian Hare association was to have met last night, but there were few members present and no business was transacted.

  Today's Feature

Students to Participate.

The City Council will be assisted through their regular meeting tomorrow evening in City Hall by members of the Carthage High School participating in Student Government Day.

Traditionally, students speak for an assigned Council member or City staff member during the meeting. The process of voting for Council members should be simplified because the agenda schedules only votes on various recreation programs.

Contracts for management of girls softball, youth swimming, youth baseball, and adult softball programs will be brought before the Council.

New business, which typically is voted on at the next meeting, includes:

Council bill 00-13 adopting an amended Personnel Policy Manual.

C.B. 00-14 banning glass alcoholic beverage containers on City property except for Memorial Hall.

C.B. 00-15, 00-16, 00-17, 00-18, and 00-19 concerning the regulation and licensing of sales of intoxicating liquor by restaurants on weekdays and Sundays.

C.B 00-20 modifying rates for CW&EP.

Mornin',

Time ta get ready for the local candidates to be out and about. Several Council seats have races along with the seven runnin’ for the two school board seats.

The election is the third of April so we got about a month. Also, of course is the school bond issue and the City lodgin’ tax proposal. Most expect more than usual to turn out for an April election.

‘Course the more that turn out the more representative of the community an election is. You’ve heard it before and I’m sure you’ll hear it again. Try to make the effort to get to the polls. The typical fifteen or twenty percent turnout just doesn’t seem like an adequate number for a real showin’.

Take some time to study the candidates and issues, then make your mark.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell & Kelly Carrell

Just about every time we use PVC pipe, we wind up with leftovers. Here’s a way to turn that trash into something useful:

Set all your 4-, 5-, and 6-inch-long scraps vertically, side by side, either in a line or in a group. The don’t even have to have the same diameter. Then glue them together with some PVC cement.

That gives you a super bench top storage area for all sorts of small stuff. You can keep screwdrivers, pliers, knives, chisels, paintbrushes and lots of other things in the tubes. You can even glue a board to the bottom so things don’t fall through, if you like. It’s fun to do and can be very handy.

Dear Al & Kelly: I finally figured out what was smelling so bad in my kitchen. It was the food disposer in our sink. It worked fine, and I never realized how dirty it could get. My sister told me to drop some ice cubes down the disposer and crush them up. Then I dropped in a lemon. The disposer ate them all up, and it smells really nice now. My sister says that if I do this once a month, it will never stink again. - M.J.

Q. I dropped some instant glue on my Formica-topped kitchen table. How can I remove the stuff? - J.Z.

A: The makers of at least one brand of such glue have a special remover on the market. You should be able to find it where such adhesives are sold.
