Husband: Listen to this. This article states that in some of the old Roman prisons that have been unearthed, they found the petrified remains of the prisoners.

Wife: Gracious! Those must be what they call hardened criminals.

Many a child who watches television for hours will go down in history, not to mention arithmetic, English, and geography.

Counsel: Do you wish to challenge any of the jury?

Prisoner: Well, I think I could lick that little fellow on this end.

  Today's Feature

Lodging Tax Effort.

Dexter Friesen was elected chairman of the Lodging Tax Committee that met for the first time on Wednesday afternoon. The City Council approved the committee’s appointments by Mayor Kenneth Johnson to bring recommendations as to how the City’s 4% lodging tax revenue could best be utilized.

Committee members include representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Carthage, Victorian Carthage, the Carthage Historic Preservation Society (Phelps House), Precious Moments, hotel/motel owners, and the City.

Beth Simmons was elected vice-chair and Tom Short will serve as secretary.

The new Main Street Carthage Director, Carol Green, was also present.

"One of the things you want to do," said Mayor Johnson, "is to explore and see where we can get the most out of our money, make it go the furthest and do the most good."

The City expects to generate approximately $120,000 a year in revenue from the tax. Friesen said that was about half of the potential from existing motel rooms.

Tonight is the opening reception for our annual Membership Show !! As usual it is from 6pm-8pm and everyone is invited. We always have a great combination of interesting art, people and food so you should come by and see this for yourself !! This year we have our largest number of members participating with about 35. There are almost as many mediums as there are pieces!

We love the diversity this type of show offers the general public.....something for everyone !! FYI here are the mediums you’ll find in and around the gallery........

Sculpture- metal, clay, stone, and mixed media, ceramics, pastel, oil, fibers, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, jewelry, sterling silver and pearl jewelry, water media, wood burning and pencil. We hope to see you here !!

Last weekend we had a blast !! It was the stone carving workshop and Art Forum barbecue. Bill had 10 students chipping away at chunks of alabaster and wondering what they had gotten themselves into !!

Jake Evans just graduated from Carthage High, is very talented and interested in the arts, and was awarded the Sandy Higgins Scholarship for the workshop fee and the Jeannie Hott Scholarship for the piece of stone he needed.

We were very happy to have him and hoped he enjoyed himself !!

Saturday evening we hosted a barbecue for the carvers and the Art Forum group complete with live music thanks to the Plains Folks !! We estimated about 40 came out to nosh on Shellie’s burgers, tater salad, slaw, baked beans, etc !! Our patio out back was the perfect spot for everyone to gather and eat dinner together !!

We thank Shellie for volunteering to put the dinner together......and cook it.......all by herself !! It was delicious !!! She’s our food artist !!

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

Up to this point, the distribution of the Lodging Tax revenue has been pretty much up to the Council. Various agencies would pitch their cause each year to the Budget Committee and would be awarded an amount accordin’ to the importance as interpreted by that committee. Some attempts to clarify parameters were made, but when it came down to it, they weren’t followed vary closely.

Hopefully the Lodgin’ Tax Committee will arrive at some set of priorities that will not only allow the City to get more for their money, but also allow the agencies some guidelines as to how much they can expect on an annual basis.

Whether it’s all or nothin’, they could at least plan accordin’ly.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

Stress, heat, improper nutrition and vacations all take their toll. We are in a hurry and rush society with me at the head of the pack!

Spirulina - a natural food supplement that is easily digestible providing an excellent cross of nutrients and protein. It is commonly found in weight control formulas for its ability to satisfy hunger. Creates internal energy.

Bee Pollen - strengthens and builds the system. It has been used to make one "buzz" through the day. It is rich in amino acids and enzymes - natural energizers. If one has allergies to bee sting, this is not for you. Start in small doses and work up.

Damiana - has been used to treat those in an exhausted state. Although it has been used to help balance hormones and is often associated with increasing sexual prowess, it is in many energy formulas.

Ginko - is an adaptogenic herb helping the body to deal with stress thus burning less "stress" energy. It is a gift for the aging as it increases blood flow to the brain and extremities, improves mental clarity and helps with other blood conditions. Much study has been done on Ginko proving its benefits.

Ginseng - an old standby used by many to overcome stress and weakness. Ginseng is a tonic herb and is best used on a daily basis as it is used in the Orient. In China it is used as a preventative.

Herbs, being the gift they are, may benefit one and not the other. Kind of like what satisfies one youngster on her birthday may not please another.
