today's laugh

It was once remarked to Lord Chesterfield that a human is the only creature endowed with the power of laughter. "True," said the peer, "and you may add, perhaps, that it is the only creature that deserves to be laughed at."

Doctor- "I have to report, sir, that you are the father of triplets."
Politician- "Impossible! I’ll demand a recount."

TO MAKE TILE SHINGLES.

The Commercial Club has appointed a committee to raise a $1,500 bonus for the Bonsib tile roofing plant. If the money is secured, Mr. Bonsib says he will begin remodeling the pottery at once and will be making tile shingles before Feb. 1. It is believed that the factory will prove a very advantageous thing for the city and the desirability is being strongly urged.

The following are the conditions of the donation:

We, the undersigned, for the purpose of encouraging the location and maintenance in Carthage, Mo., of a plant for manufacturing of the Donaldson patent clay roofing shingles, hereby subscribe the amount opposite our respective names, the said amount to be paid to H. B. Bonsib & Co., of assignee upon the following express conditions, viz.

1. The said "The H. S. Bonsib & Co. shall expend the necessary sums for completely equipping with proper machinery a manufactory in Carthage, Mo., for the consideration of the said Donaldson roofing shingle.

3. The patentee of the said Donaldson roofing shingles, or his assignees, shall grant and assign to the said, The H. S. Bonsib & Co., and to no other party or parties exclusive right to manufacture the said Donaldson roofing shingle in Carthage, Mo., and in the territory adjacent to and within a radius of 100 miles from said city of Carthage. Said patentee of his assignees and the said H. S. Bonsib & Co., or assignees shall stipulate and agree that no factory for the manufacturing of said shingles shall be located in the above described territory except at the city of Carthage.

The Name Game.

The City Council Public Services Committee voted last Monday evening to resubmit a Council bill to the full Council that would define the policy of how City facilities would be named.

Facilities included would be public parks, buildings, signs, and streets in the City. Facilities within parks such as playgrounds and picnic shelters could be named separately.

If the bill is approved by the Council, the Public Services Committee would oversee the process. Naming applications would be accepted by the Committee for review. After a name was selected by the Committee, public notice of the recommended Qualifying Name would appear once during a thirty day period in the City’s official newspaper. Citizen comments and recommendations would have to be in writing and submitted to the Committee within thirty days of the posting.

The Committee is also recommending that only one facility be allowed to be named after any one individual. To be considered an individual must have contributed significantly to the interest of the City as a whole.

Victorian Christmas at Precious Moments.

new release

Step back in time to the late Victorian era and celebrate Precious Moments Chapel Center’s "Christmas Remembered" event during November and December, 2001. Beginning on Saturday, November 10, the Precious Moment’s Victorian Wedding Island will be transformed to show all of the wonders of Christmas as it was in the early 1900’s.

This year’s event will include a one-act performance in the Ballroom of the Mansion. Clothed in authentic costumes from this historical period, performers will provide entertainment for guests as they gather in the elegant ballroom of our Victorian mansion.

The play features three of the performers from last year’s popular show, including Aunt Thelma, the sarcastic elderly lady whose poor hearing provides comic relief during the performance. The characters Uncle Henry and Aunt Lucinda also return to the Island to decorate the ballroom as part of the festivities. It is when the tree trimming goes awry that things get a little interesting. As a shorter, one-act performance, guests can enjoy the play in its entirety.

Victorian Christmas performances will be on Saturday and Sundays, from Nov. 10 through Dec. 9. Performances are held every 30 minutes beginning at 10 a.m., and concluding with the 3 p.m. show. There will not be a performance at 12:30 p.m. With beautiful decorations and Victorian memorabilia displays, guests will have the opportunity to admire the details and fineries of this era.

For more information, please call Precious Moments Chapel at 358-7599 or 1-800-543-7975.

Want To Get Involved In Stone Carving?

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Recently we were asked to go to Lamar and talk with some of the local folks who are trying to get an arts organization going in their town.

We met with a committee of local business people at the Theibaud Auditorium and had a great round table discussion as to the highs and lows of getting such a huge project off the ground.

This community is hoping to form a non-profit organ-ization, raise money through fund raising events and purchase a building. The building they have in mind is large and can accommodate the performing arts, as well.

We shared any and all of our secrets with them and wished them all the luck in the world. We did invite them to come down here and see for themselves what we do, who we are and how we work.

There is a new project on our horizon.......we would like to get a community stone carving project started next spring when the weather will be nice.

Bill Snow has donated and delivered a HUGE monolith to our side yard in the hopes of getting people interested in a joint project. The plan is to have designs submitted by would-be carvers. If you submit a design we would expect you to help carve and if your design is chosen we would expect you to help see to the projects finish.

If you know of anyone interested have them send their designs to us here !!

Work dates will be set and tools will be provided when the time comes.

More......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th www. ozarkartistscolony.com Open Tues. - Sat 9am - 3pm.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

The City has apparently never had an official policy to direct the Council as to what criteria should be used in namin’ it facilities.

Most of the City buildings are merely identified by the function they house; street, parks, police, fire and engineering. Parks have typically been named after a donor if not a generic title like Municipal Park.

I’ve never checked for sure, maybe Municipal was a fella back in Civil War times. Mr. Municipal also had the clout to get the golf Course named after him. Course he musta fell outa favor cause they also have the Municipal Land fill. Maybe that’s where he’s buried.

Mister Municipal has a nice ring to it. Course those with close association prob’ly just call him Muni in casual circumstances. That’s not bad either.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

Browsing through Louise Tenney’s Today’s Herbal Health just decided to pass some info along.

LECITHIN - a phospholipid that supplies choline. Necessary to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (essential in brain and nerve function). It breaks up fat into small droplets of primary importance in keeping cholesterol soluble.

KELP - a natural source of iodine and all trace minerals, kelp contains a kind of fiber that has considerable cholesterol-lowering activity. It is also known to contain some antibiotic properties.

YUCCA - is rich in the phytonutrient family termed "phytosterols." These compounds are helpful in improving digestion and are effective in controlling arthritis. Ask anyone who has tried it on their animals with sore joints...especially horse lovers!

L-TAURINE is an amino acid essential for proper heart, retina and brain function. It is very useful when combined with magnesium in calming and stabilizing the nerves.
