"Why did you tear the back part out of that new book?" asked the long-suffering wife of the absent-minded doctor.
"Excuse me, dear," said the famous surgeon, "the part you speak of was labelled ‘Appendix’ and I took it out without thinking."

Doctor- "I can do nothing for your complaint. It is hereditary."
Patient- "Then send the bill to my father."

Memorial Hall Renovation.

The City Council will meet on Thursday this week due to several Council members attending the Missouri Municipal League Conference.

The Council will return to a discussion of renovation of Memorial Hall. The Missouri Veteran’s Commission has committed $604,000 of the estimated $1.2 million project as a 50/50 grant. The Council has budgeted $400,000 for the project and requested another $100,000 each from the Boylan Fund and Steadley Foundation. According to City Administrator Tom Short, the Steadley Foundation had committed to $100,000 if the Boylan Foundation would match. Short has reported that the Boylan Foundation Board did not approve the request at its last meeting. A bid from R.E. Smith of $1,071,000 for construction was recommended by the Public Services Committee but needs approval of the Council.

The project began with anticipated commitment of $200,000 from the City. The original estimated cost of the project by architects was $800,000 and the plan was to secure $400,000 from the Veteran’s Commission and the two $100,000 grants.

Mornin',

I’m again reminded of the "free" puppy that graced our home several years back. As any pet owner can tell you, here is no such thing as a free puppy.

A local example of the same theory is the recent purchase of the Big Smith facility by Leggett & Platt. The selling price of $185,000 was no doubt a bargain, on the surface. But, as my grand dad used to say about the purchase of a dinner table, it’s not the initial cost, it’s the upkeep.

The prospect of keepin’ such a large buildin’ just heated enough to keep pipes from freezin’ prob’ly kept most bids on the Smith property at a respectable level. Leggett is reportedly spendin’ another $200,000 to upgrade the facility, may end up with a half a million in the total project. About half the cost of the proposed renovation of the Hall.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Q: We just moved into a house heated by floor furnaces. Should we cover the furnaces during the off season to keep the dust out? -G.G.

A: Not only do you want to keep out dust, you wouldn’t want your air conditioner to have to cool the crawl space under the floor. Take up the floor grille and cut a piece of plywood or hardboard to fit it. You can tape the wood to the underside and slip the grille back into place. You also could tape a plastic trash bag to the bottom of the grille.

Q: We have copper gutters on our home and must replace a downspout. It’s on the back where it’s not seen, and I had planned to just use an inexpensive aluminum downspout. A friend tells me that joining unlike metals will cause a galvanic reaction that could ruin one or both metals. Is this true? -Y.P.

A: Possibly. Spray-paint the surfaces of both components where they will come in contact with each other. That would be outside the copper and inside the aluminum. Use a paint specified for metal.

When dry, the paint should ensure that there’s no actual contact of the two metals.

SUPER HINT: If you have kept wicker furniture in storage over the winter , treat it to a warm bath. Clean it with a little diluted soap water. Rinse it and let it sun dry. The chair should smell and look great.
