What shape is the earth?
I dunno.
Well, what kind of earrings does your girl wear?
Square ones.
No, I mean the ones she wears on Sunday.
Round.
Then, what shape is the earth?
Square on weekdays — and round on Sundays.

Somehow when two know-it-alls get together they disagree.

NEW FEATURES AT THE Y.M.C.A.

The Y.M.C.A. is to inaugurate several new features in the very near future.

A bible class, to meet weekly, will be organized next week, under charge of Judge W. H. Waters.

The social committees met this afternoon to arrange a regular monthly social, the first to be held Friday night of next week at the rooms.

Secretary Spencer is arranging for a course of his weekly evening lectures, to be given at the rooms by business and professional men of Carthage.

James Luke, who owns the Y.M.C.A. building, put a plasterer at work today repairing and repapering the gymnasium, which has been more or less damaged by basketball, Indian clubs, etc.

It is the intention of Physical Director Wood to organize four gymnastic classes at once.

Council Back On Schedule.

The other scheduled vote will be for adopting the naming policy for public buildings, structures, facilities and streets as recommended by the Public Services Committee.

A Council bill authorizing a contract with Main Street Carthage for the above mentions funds will be in first readings well as authorization of the expenditure of $10,066 to pay for the purchase, approved previously, of property owned by Larry Allen.

A finance package in the amount of $1,915,000 for golf course improvements will also be in first reading.

The Council is also scheduled to hear a presentation by the Carthage Mill & Museum Park Corporation of Webb City requesting an endorsement on a proposed park located near Morrow Mill.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

Although not frequently identified as a legitimate "old saying," I’ve always been humored by the quip, "I heard it outa the corner of my ear." A sense of irony maybe, or just sophomoric humor. Either way, I find in funny.

I’ve got an uncle that I was always told had a dry sense of humor. As a kid, I categorized it as "corny." ‘Course I figured any parent to be a little corny. Not hip with really good humor like elephant jokes and really tough tongue twisters.

I hope that my appreciation of humor has matured somewhat, but I still get a kick outa swappin’ elephant joke with grandkids. The real surprise sometimes is the depth of understanding youngsters have about humor. You’re never too young, or old, for a good laugh or two.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell & Kelly Carrell

Dear Al & Kelly:

We finally switched to large plastic boxes for storage instead of plain cardboard boxes. The plastic protects our things better and moisture won’t be a problem anymore.

There is one drawback: the cost. They last forever, but the initial cost was too much for us to do too much at one time. A really good plastic container that isn’t so expensive is a plastic garbage can. They have snap-shut lids and cost about half of what the boxes cost, plus you can fit a lot more stuff in one. We use the garbage cans for winter or summer clothes, since we usually pack and unpack them all at once.

Shower curtains are still popular, at least for looks. They sometimes do have a problem, though, with allowing water to get around them and out on the bathroom floor.

Shower curtains - or at least the vinyl liners - used to have magnets in the hems so that they would magnetically attach to the tub. But magnets won’t work on the new fiber-glass and acrylic tubs, so manufacturers don’t use the magnets anymore. Velcro, however, works just as well, and you can install it yourself.

You can buy stick-on Velcro strips at hardware stores and home centers. Just apply one piece to the tub and the matching piece to the shower curtain.
