today's laugh

I just read about this writer who started out poor, but died a millionaire. They say he acquired it through industry, economy, continuous effort, perseverance, a touch of genius, and an uncle who died and left his a million dollars.

Sure I can act! Look! (Imitates something.)
You mean, you’re a mimic.
Don’t try to fool me — a mimic is sixty seconds.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

HE USED A KNIFE AND RAN.

Railroad Laborers Got Into a Fight Last Night Back of a Saloon.

Two laborers, probably from one of the railroad camps, indulged in a fight in the rear of the Model saloon on East Fourth street last night. One man was getting the worst of the encounter when he drew an ugly looking knife and slashed the other on the arm.

The police had been called and Officer Reno arrived about the time of the knife play. The man with the weapon caught sight of a blue uniform and ran out behind the buildings, dodging the officers until he made good his escape.

The man with the bleeding arm said his name was Johnson. He is not badly injured.

Sundays at artCentral.

Lee Sours, artCentral

Only two weeks are left to see this month’s pastel exhibit at artCentral. It is a really excellent exhibit by Joplin artist, Thomas DeCleene. Visitors at our gallery are always amazed at the talent of this artist who is new to our area from Colorado. And speaking of visitors, this week we had musicians and a photographer. You never know what will be going on here. This past Sunday we were spinning natural fibers into yarn with the use of a spinning wheel. Last Sunday was a Celtic music jam session which included some great Celtic harp playing by a musician from Miami, OK. Some really fine musicians from Springfield were also in attendance.

Currently on view in the upstairs gallery are the works of artist, Jerry Long. This exhibit called "A Room with a View" contains pottery, paintings, and decorative pieces. You will see evidence of his sense of humor in his work. Several of his pieces have sold already. The photography of Mary Ann Soerries continues to be on display at Shellie’s restaurant from now until October 19.

Attention artists: Art Forum is sponsoring an architectural show this fall at artCentral. They are calling for entries of any architectural rendering of a structure within 75 miles of Carthage. Think unusual doorknobs, gargoyles, historical sites, window reflections, etc. Any medium is acceptable. Artists are limited to 3 works each. There is no entry fee. Stop by artCentral to obtain an entry form and exhibiting guidelines.

HOURS: T – F 11 - 5

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

If the run for Sheriff is a three way race, it could be hard to determine the advantage to any of the three candidates.

I the Democrats turn out their typical 25 to 30% of the votes, and the two others split the remainder, it could be down to a 6 or 8 % race. If by chance a fourth candidate jumps in, that might eliminate that margin.

Bein’ a special election, the turnout will likely be fairly low also. That’s gonna put the pressure on the parties and the candidates to turn out their supporters.

‘Course I’m still thinkin’ the nominated Republican candidate is the one ta beat, but with a strong run from an independent or two, it should be at least interestin’ to follow.

Whatever the outcome, the regular primary election will be next August.

This is some fact, but mostly,

What a wonderful reprieve we had from "usual" August in Missouri weather. Who would have thought we would be having temps in the ‘60’s. With the heat, the wild herbs, or weeds as some call them, have just about reached their peak for gathering. A new crop of late summer and fall herbs will be coming in soon.

Stinging nettle is a common weed which has been studied for its’ effectiveness against allergies. Feedback on this herb has been good in this area of the Ozarks. Nettle has also been traditionally used to increase the flow urine. Nettle contains substances with anti-androgen(male hormone activity. The beneficial effects of Nettle extract are increased when combined with the herb saw palmetto.

Jewelweed has been used topically to stop the itching and spread of poison ivy. I have been taught by my elders to look for the cure withing reach of the offender. It is easy to say, but hard to do. However, often one will find this beautiful jewelweed in near vicinity of poison ivy in damp areas of land. Temporarily rubbing the flower and leaves on skin will stop itching, but the tincture has a much longer lasting effect.
