today's laugh

"Do you keep animal crackers."
"No, but we have some very nice dog biscuits."

Another, who may be said to have his ups and downs is the unfortunate chap who happens to get an aisle seat at a movie.

Customer- "Three of those apples you sent me were rotten. I am bringing them back."
Storekeeper- "That’s all right, madam. You needn’t bring them back. Your word is just as good as the apples."

artCentral Welcomes New Board Members.

By Lee Sours, artCentral

ArtCentral would like to welcome two new members to its board of directors. They are Cherry Poulson and Ron Peterson, Jr. Poulson owns Cherry’s Custom Framing on Howard Street in Carthage. She has a variety of frames and artwork for sale at her shop. Ron Peterson was on the board for three years in the past and now we are glad to have him back. He owns and manages rental properties in Carthage.

If you haven’t see the Richard Logsdon paintings in Shellie’s on West Third, stop in and take a look. His work is highly prized and is offered in a wide range of prices. His work has been selling at galleries in New England and is becoming known in this area as well.

artCentral’s Hyde House gallery currently has an exhibit of black and white photography by Joplin artist, Bill Perry, III. The gallery is located near the Fairview Greenhouse on East Thirteenth Street. We’ve had a lot of favorable comments by people who have seen the exhibit. It features the human form and close-up shots of horses. These photos are hand printed and are offered as framed or unframed.

Next month we’ll have the Ozark Pastel Society group exhibit in the Main Gallery. When seen under a microscope, pastel particles are multifaceted and reflect color and light with intensity. So February will be a colorful month in the gallery. And we’ll also have the works of David Winward, a Joplin area artist, on display in the Members’ Gallery. The paintings will show scenes from Germany.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

I suppose for those who live where cold weather is the norm, a day like yesterday doesn’t affect ‘em much. ‘Round these parts the extreme cold generates considerable conversation.

‘Course the good news is today it might climb above freezin’ and the forecast for next Tuesday in near 60. The weekend is supposed ta be in the balmy high 40’s.

I’m not gonna become the local weather guy, just tryin’ to shed a little light of hope.

It’s prob’ly a little early to be plantin’ the garden, so I’d keep the mittens handy. Another few weeks we’ll be through the cold snaps and be watchin’ for tornadoes. Somethin’ those in the colder regions don’t have ta look forward to.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

With flu season in full swing, it is nice to now the tried and true cold remedies for a little relief. The number one preventative measure, is not to consistently expose yourself to it be being in areas where people are coughing and sneezing and running low grade fevers waiting until it totally knocks the props out from under them to isolate themselves. One of my pet peeves are those who refuse to cover their mouths when coughing or use a tissue or hankie to catch a sneeze...sneeze down your shirt if you have to, but don’t give it to the innocent. I would put not tending to those as offensive as some find second hand smoke.

Boneset has traditionally been used to stop the aches associated with the flu. Many are using black elderberry as research has supported that it is effective against most flu viruses. Following the course set forth on the bottle is the most effective way to stop it. I personally have been drinking a lot of the hot tea and taking an immune system modulator. Echinacea and goldenseal is a great combination as the echinacea boosts the immune system while the goldenseal goes to work on the infections. There are also available some great anti-viral formulas.

I subscribe to the old method of warming bathes and cooling bathes. When the aches and coldness seem to penetrate my bones, I get into a hot bath to which I have added ginger powder (I like it so much I buy pound bags) then get into a favorite warm robe and go to bed to sweat it out. Most know to drink plenty of fluids.
