GRADERS AT WORK IN TOWN.

Work on the White River railroad has commenced inside the limits of Carthage. Page & McMahan yesterday put a force of men with teams, scrapers and plows to grading west of the Frisco crossing near the old stock yards, along the side of College hill. They are making dirt fly. The work will progress westward as fast as the right-of-way can be cleared of houses. The graders are camped near the Missouri Pacific stock yards.

A new rumor has the floor today. It says that the White River railroad company has bought 50 acres from Dr. Carter just south of the upper bridge presumably for shop purposes. But Dr. Carter could not be located this afternoon, railroad men knew nothing of the alleged deal, and confirmation is lacking. It is true, however, that surveyors were at work out east of the Frisco crossing yesterday in the neighborhood of the alleged future round house site.

Making Room.

On April 8 the Carthage R-9 School District community will vote on the purposed $11.4 million bond issue. The funds would be used for renovations at the high school, sports facilities and the building of a sixth and seventh grade school.

According to a brochure provided by the Carthage R-9 administration, the six/seven school will open up room in district elementary schools and junior high school. Sixth and seventh graders would move to the new school opening 11 elementary school class rooms. Over 200 students would be moved from the junior high school to the six/seven school opening up more room. There would also be flexibility for future adjustments and expansions built into the long-range plan to accommodate changes in student demographics.

If approved the six/seven school would be built on land at HH and Chapel Road. This land is already owned by the district. The school would hold approximately 700 students.

An approved bond would mean a 15 cent increase in school tax. The bond would be paid off in 20 years.

Mornin',

As ya might be noticin’, the April 8 election is beginnin’ to get some attention. A total of six Council seats are up for grabs this year as well as the bond issue proposed by the R-9 School District.

The Council has some contested races and campaignin’ in the Wards has begun. As is typical, the Council campaigns are mainly of the door to door type. Most years a couple hundred votes will win a Council seat, some wards a lot less.

If ya see some lost soul wanderin’ through the neighborhood with some flyers in their hand, take a few minutes to find out why they wanna be on the Council. If ya got a choice, ya might as well make it an informed one.

‘Course the main thing is to actually vote. If ya don’t vote, don’t gripe.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have heart palpitations. Every now and then I can feel my chest thump, and I know it’s my heart. At night when I lie on my left side the thump gets stronger. My doctor says it’s nothing, just extra beats. Would you give me your opinion? - S.V.

ANSWER: What most people call heart palpitations are premature ventricular beats. These beats originate in the lower heart chambers — the ventricles — and they occur before the normally scheduled heartbeat should take place. The premature beat doesn’t cause the thump. The premature heartbeat empties a heart that’s only half-full. The normal beat following the premature beat empties an overfilled heart, and that is the thump you feel. Lying on the left side exaggerates the thump because, in that position, the heart is closer to the chest wall.

Every single person on Earth has a few premature beats. They don’t usually indicate trouble.

In older people, premature beats might be an indication of a heart that is not getting enough blood. Heart valve problems can also generate these beats.

However, when a heart is healthy, the occurrence of these beats is best ignored. Suppressing them with medicine can cause more trouble than leaving them alone.

Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol can reduce their frequency.
