Tolerance is the uncomfortable suspicion that the person you’re talking to may be right.

Jill: Are you an only child?
Bill: No, used to be twins.
Jill: When were you twins?
Bill: My father has a picture of me when I was two.

Spring Cleaning.

The Carthage Police Department announced Friday its Annual Spring Cleanup Enforcement Project. The project, which will start March 9, is in support of the City’s Annual Cleanup Day scheduled for May 10.

Officers will work with residents and owners regarding the cleanup of unlicensed vehicles and "junk".

According to a memo from Chief of Police Dennis Veach the police department has had excellent cooperation form citizens in past years and only had to issue a few summons to those who simply refused to comply with the city ordinances.

Citizens are encouraged to call in any problems in their neighborhood.

This coming weekend, Main Street Carthage is kicking off a new event for the square. Second Saturday is an antique and collectible show/sale scheduled to be held each and every 2nd Saturday through out the year. There will be indoor and outdoor booths (when weather permits) and a diverse selection of vendors. See inside article for details and a history of the event.

Spring is Arriving at artCentral.

By Lee Sours, artCentral

The black and white photography exhibit has been taken down and now artCentral is filled with intensely colorful scenes. It is quite a contrast. Lots of greenery, flowers, and scenes of the Ozarks are depicted by the members of the Ozarks Pastel Society.

One member Pam Leisenring of Neosho, MO enjoys sharing her experiences of southwestern Missouri through her paintings. She has two pieces in the show. In one painting, "Chore Time," she shows a bundled up person carrying buckets of feed through the snow to the barn. Then in her second painting, "Dogwood Spring," the snow melts and dogwoods bloom. Another artist, Linda Stair of Wister, OK, has a painting titled "Next?" of sheep waiting in the barn (which reminds me I need to call and schedule a spring shearing.) Another of her paintings is of a fencerow. I spent a lot of time in the hedgerow as a young person. There were birds and squirrels to watch and fence that needed mending.

Don’t forget we have the oil paintings of Richard Logsdon at Shellie’s. And the acrylic "Scenes of Germany" by David Winward are on display in the Member’s Gallery at artCentral.

Second Saturday.

by Carol Green

Main Street Carthage borrowed the name and the idea from Canton, Texas; the home of First Monday - a market of 7000 vendors who set up shop for the entire weekend of the "First Monday" of every month !

Canton is a tiny, sleepy, East Texas town boasting a population of 3,292 - except for the First Monday event. Winter months bring crowds between 175,000 to 200,000 shoppers (get that? SHOPPERS!) and nicer weather draws another 100,000 more.

It all started in 1869. First Monday was the only day of the month that the Circuit Judge traveled to Canton so the vendors in the area took full advantage of the increased crowd and set up shop on the Square in Canton, TX.

Linda Royal, Canton Chamber of Commerce, couldn’t exactly say how much money First Monday brought into the city, although "millions and millions" seemed to answer the question to my satisfaction!

Main Street Carthage borrowed the concept of the name and the regularity of the event but that’s where the comparisons end. Limiting vendors to antiques and collectibles will compliment existing retail stores an the square now, and hopefully capitalize on an already existing customer base.

Second Saturday is in its infant stage. Starting small is the plan because this is an event that will grow bigger and better with each passing month. Quality dealers are just as important as quality customers.

Come to Second Saturday on the square in Carthage. It’s the Second Saturday of March and it will be the first of many Seconds to come!

Mornin',

Startin’ small is prob’ly a good thing. I, like most, started that way myself. About 9 pounds.

Looks like the weather is gonna be just about perfect for the Main Street Carthage outdoor antique sale on the Square this weekend. It should get a good chance to get off to a good start. Even for those who aren’t antique enthusiasts, the day should be a good excuse to get out a do a little walkin’ ‘round the Square.

‘Course the hope is that shoppers will also take advantage of the shops of various nature that line the outer rim of the Square. If ya haven’t been downtown in a while, ya might be a little surprised at the variety of merchandise available.

Remember the sooner ya get there, the less you will miss.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Natural Nutrition

By Mari An Willis

Here is a quick rundown of the action of some amino acids.

ALANINE is highly concentrated in the muscle and is extremely important as a source of muscle energy. It is also a participant in the regulation of glucose metabolism.

ARGININE is necessary when there is a major muscle growth, or pregnancy for that matter, or any major trauma. It assists the body in the release of growth hormone. It has been reported to improve fertility in males. It may also help lower cholesterol.

CARNITINE is generally supplemented for those dealing with heart conditions. It helps improve fat mobilization and some have said it may be useful in the treatment of obesity. According to Dr. Norman Shealy, it’s greatest benefit is to individuals with poor heart function.

LYSINE is important in growth and strength of the immune system. Lysine is currently being studied in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. It is noted that low levels are often found in Parkinsonis, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, asthma and depression.

TAURINE, again according to Dr. Shealy, is deficient in 86 percent of individuals with depression. Taurine is important for healthy heart, eyes and brain function. It is found only in animal protein or the grain quinoa. It is helpful in managing hypertension, depression, and even gallbladder disease. It is often found in formulas to help treat alcohol withdrawal.
