INTERESTING MELANGE.

THE CHILD WAS LOST.

The 3-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. McCullough of West Oak street, caused his mother and the neighbors no end of anxiety for a time yesterday afternoon. Mrs. McCullough was making a call at the home of Mrs. Eldred on West Oak street and had the little boy with her. During the afternoon he wandered away from the yard where he was at play and was not found for several hours. He was finally found in the vicinity of the Benton school house at the corner of Mound and McGregor streets.

Back when the 8 mm camera was the rage, my dad became expert at takin’ short snips of activity. ‘Course the reasonin’ was ya only had seven minutes of film in a roll.

The result was a series of various facial expressions and kids dartin’ across the scene in a frantic effort to be captured on film.

Graduation films showed a series of kids reachin’ out, gettin’ their diploma and a hand shake. About five or ten seconds each for the entire class. Fortunately they were small classes. ‘Course family members got a few seconds more, and a few shots walkin’ into the celebration.

All this had to take place within reach of an electrical outlet for the flood lights attached to the camera. I only wish I had a video of the cameraman.

This is some fact, but mostly,

HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson

• Newer heating systems average about 80 percent efficiency, versus 65 percent for systems 20 years old or older — and the increase in efficiency can save you big bucks. Now is the time to think about replacing your older heating system, as heating service appointments are more available in the warmer months.

• If you heat a pita in the microwave first, it will be easier to open and will rip less. About 10 seconds should do.

• "I just wanted to write and tell you about the many uses of double-stick tape. I think it is a very versatile tool. I use it to hang lighter items on my walls, since I am a renter and it does not leave a hole. Also, you can use it to reduce noise from vibrations. I used it in my car to keep the carpet lying flat in the trunk." — J.T., via e-mail

• "As family reunion time is coming up, I just wanted to mention these two special things our family does to make gatherings run more smoothly. First, we set aside a room to be used for changing and feeding infants, and we use that room for napping also. We make sure to have a monitor with several receivers, so someone is in charge of checking on napping babies. Also, we set up a ‘seniors pavilion’ with several comfy chairs in an area that is in view of all the action, but out of the way and not too hot. That way, our older family members can chat and see all the kids without having to move around too much." — Family Specialist in Georgia

• Did you know that you can purchase mugging insurance in New York?

• "Plastic water bottles that come from the store and vending machines need to be replaced frequently. If you are a ‘fill the bottle back up’ kind of person, you can purchase a hard plastic bottle to use over and over. Just remember to recycle the store-bought bottles." — Mary F. in Santa Fe, N.M.
