Fishing?
No, just drowning worms.

"So how did it go at the golf course today?" the fellow asked his 6 month pregnant wife as she came in the door.
"How did it go?" she asked. "It went great. I played so well that when I walked off the eighteenth green, I actually felt the baby applaud!"

A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Hottest Day of the Summer.

Today has been the hottest day of this summer. Scarcely any breeze was blowing and the radiating shafts of heat that reflected upward from the scorching street filled the atmosphere with a double distilled extract of caloric that was almost unbearable.

At 9:30 a.m. the thermometer stood at 96 degrees. At noon it was 100 and at 1:30 p.m. some thermometers on the north side of the square registered 104. The different thermometers around the square varied from 101 to 104 degrees.

Found 12 Bushels of Wheat.

Wm. Garrison, living six miles south of this city, ran across six sacks full of wheat, laid up in a hazel thicket and covered with brush and leaves, this morning. It is barely possible that some over-loaded farmer left it there until his return from mill, but is more likely a case of finding stolen property.

Letter to the Editor.

Opinions expressed reflect those of the writer and not necessarily those of the Mornin' Mail.

This letter is in regards to the Renewable Environmental Solutions, RES. While we have been told what a fine addition this is to our city and economy, they have failed to mention the horrible odors we are having to live with. The odors vary depending on which direction the wind is from. There were times throughout the fall and winter that the smell was so bad on the Square it was almost unbearable. And now as the wind has shifted to the south the odors are causing us to avoid outdoor activities at our home. We have not been able to have our windows open as much as we would like due to the odors. The odors range from a dead rotting smell to the smell of raw sewage.

We have contacted the Carthage Fire Department as well as the officers of RES. I don’t know if it causes any potential health problems, but it is certain to affect those of us down wind financially, by hurting our property values.

I have contacted the Department of Natural Resources, DNR. They ask that anyone who notices odors from the RES plant to call them. Their phone number is 417-891-4300. They will keep a record of all complaints and follow up on them. You are welcome to contact the Fire Department, but to get to the bottom of the problem DNR needs to become more involved.

Mornin'

I’ve often wondered why people don’t vote. I don’t mean those that don’t show up at the polls, but those who show up but fail to vote.

Last Tuesday 888,416 people voted on the marriage definition amendment. Those votin’ on the White River Gamblin’ amendment numbered only 886,441. Those votin’ for Governor were 862,586. State Senator only generated interest by 810,013 voters. Only 720,347 voted for an Attorney General candidate. Apparently over 178,000 voters don’t care who enforces the marriage definition amendment.

Now the Libertarians show a more consistent pattern. There were 2,290 votes for the Libertarian Senate candidate and 2,043 votes for the Attorney General. Eleven of those came from Jasper County.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

TIDBITS of knowledge:

• If you break out in poison oak, or ivy or any rash, start taking a good blood purifier such as red clover several times a day.

• Stevia, an herb 300 times sweeter than sugar. No known side effects other than bitter if overused.

• Cider vinegar in a bath will help to change the PH balance of the skin and leave you with a cool clean, relaxed feeling. Helps stop the itching from heat or any kind of rash.

• Black cohosh is used by many women to assist them through symptoms of menopause.

• Colicky babies will find relief when nursing Mothers drink fennel tea. If not nursing, a diluted infusion in very small amounts relieves gas.

• One may find relief from a burning, weeping sting by applying a poltice of slippery elm, comfrey root powder and aloe vera juice. Apply as often as needed to keep dry.
