        INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
        A
        Nickel In The Slot.
        The Home Telephone company is
contemplating putting in a number of new styled
phones, especially in the rural districts. The new
device to be installed is called a
"controllaphone," which has already been put in
        a number of larger cities.
        The controllaphone greatly resembles a
common phone but is operated in a different manner.
The party wishing to use the phone puts a nickel in
the slot at the top and takes down the receiver. If
central can not get the person called for she uses a
certain plug on the switchboard and down drops the coin
in a small aperture, where the one who has called up may
easily get it. If, however, the person is reached, the
nickel drops in a receptacle to be emptied by the
telephone company. It is the intention to ask the person
who has the phone put in to insure to the company a
certain sum each month. If there is an insufficient
amount it is to be made up by the owner of the
        phone.

                Mornin'
                So be good for goodness
                sake.
                Ever get onea those Christmas
carols in your head and not be able to shake it?
I dont mean one that you actually know all
the words to, but one ya only know one line to.
Oh you can hum all the rest of the song ok, but
you only can remember that one phrase.
There are a few carols that I
once thought I knew, but around Christmas they
always seem to have more verses than I remember.
But when it comes to that one phrase, boy can I
                belt it out.
They say this is onea the most
stressful times of the year. Usually the
attribute the stress to gettin together
with family, or gift givin or bein
                alone durin the season. Im
                thinkin its those unlearned carols
                that really cause the problem.
This is some fact, but mostly,

                By Paul
                Donohue, M.D.
                DEAR DR.
DONOHUE: During my yearly exam, my doctor heard a
noise in my left neck artery. He sent me to have
a scan, which showed I have a 75 percent blockage
in that artery. He says I should have surgery. I
have heard that this is very risky surgery and I
could end up with a stroke or worse. Whats
your opinion? What can I do other than surgery to
                prevent a stroke? X.B.
                ANSWER: Strokes result from
interruption of blood flow to a part of the
brain. An obstruction in the right or left
carotid artery is one major cause for a stroke.
                A 75 percent obstruction is a
very significant obstruction and puts you at high
risk for having a stroke. Reaming out the
obstruction or replacing the site of obstruction
with a graft takes you off the list of people
likely to have a stroke. The surgery does have
risks, but the risk is small compared with the
                risk of doing nothing.
                Blocked heart arteries can
sometimes be unplugged by dilating them with a
balloon-tipped catheter, and that procedure is
under evaluation for blocked carotid arteries. If
I faced your dilemma, I would choose surgery.
                Alternatives to surgery include
taking medicines that lower cholesterol, just as
people with heart artery blockages do. Blood
pressure control is important. Exercise, weight
loss, not smoking, and moderating salt use are
other elements that can slow the progression of
                an obstruction.
