A mugger stopped a man in a New York side street and demanded money. The man had no cash, but afraid that he’d get hurt, he said, "Let me give you a check."

The mugger answered, "You’re nuts. Why would I take your check? I don’t even know you."

"What’s that on your cheek?"

"It’s a birthmark."

"No kidding. How long have you had it?"

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

New Firm of Blacksmiths.

C. H. Ziller, who operates a blacksmith shop south of Dorn & Kitching’s cornice works, on Grant street, has formed a partnership with E. B. Platt, who operates a blacksmith shop a block away, at the corner of Howard avenue and Fifth street. The former will tomorrow move his shop to the quarters of the latter, and the firm will be Platt & Ziler.

The shop vacated by Mr. Ziler will be used by Dorn & Kitching for the manufacture of filters, and the machinery of the filter plant will shortly be moved in there.

White Mules Missing.

A number of white mules either strayed or were stolen from a barn lot on a farm four miles northwest of Avilla after 10 o’clock Monday night. One of the mules wore a halter. It is not known how they could have gotten out of the lot unless someone either stole them or deliberately turned them out to stray away.

Two Events This Saturday.

Saturday July 24, the Greater Ozarks British Motoring Club will host the annual British Car and Cycle Blowout from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. The event will take place on the Carthage square. This year the Motoring Club will allow for a non-British vehicle division for the first time ever. Show planners are expecting an estimated 100 participants.

Also this Saturday, the Carthage Chamber of Commerce will host the annual City-Wide Sidewalk Sale. Businesses participating in the sale can open as early as 6:00 A.M. and remain open throughout the business day.

Director of Member Services Debra Smith says that the sidewalk sale is not restricted to Chamber of Commerce Members.

"The Chamber encourages all businesses within the city of Carthage to participate in this great retail-oriented event and reap the rewards of this well-publicized sale," said Smith.

For more information call: Dave Thorn (British Motoring Club) 359-8400 and Debra Smith (Chamber of Commerce) 358-2373.

artCamp in Progress.

By Lee Sours, artCentral

The gallery hours at artCentral have been changed this week to accommodate artCamp. We are open earlier so we can get to our classes. Hours are 10 – 4. After this week we will go back to our regular hours.

If you want to sign up for classes at artCamp, there are a few spots left. A few of the classes aren’t closed yet. We still have space in Origami, Matisse & Monet painting, Alice in Wonderland story illustration, and Nikki de Ste. Phalle sculptures.

A new exhibit is now on display at Shellie’s restaurant on West Third. The paintings of Sharon Couch of Bixby, OK will be on view from now until October 17. In this exhibit you can see bold and brightly colored acrylic paintings of fruits, chickens and even a boy and his dog who look like they are in trouble for playing in the mud.

The ever changing art displays and great cuisine make Shellie’s a great place to visit. Thanks to Shellie for letting us use her wall space as a satellite gallery.

Currently showing in our Main Gallery at artCentral are the works of Studio 55. This is a group exhibit so many styles and mediums are represented. There are some gorgeous still lifes and landscapes. Come by and see this interesting work from senior citizens of the Springfield area.

HOURS: T – F 11 - 5

Mornin'

Seems like different countries have a totally different way of buildin’ cars. Growin’ up around American made vehicles, cars from England, Germany, Japan, and others just seem odd. ‘Specially older models.

I’m guessin’ each was designed to operate on roads peculiar to their region. American cars were made to cover a lot of ground on fairly straight stretches of road. They were big ‘cause there was plenty of room to operate in and there was the thinkin’ that large cars had a better ride.

European cars seem ta be scaled down some. I suppose because of less room and roads that turned and weaved more.

The Japanese early cars like the tiny Honda were little more than a covered motorcycle with trainin’ wheels.

The English get the Square tomorrow.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just returned from the birth of another beautiful Granddaughter, Kloe, born to Kathy & Donny on the 7th of July. That makes four now. Don’t know how I got old enough to have grandkids, but the years just passed by.

Being in South Texas with more mosquitos and flying summer insects, I had to rummage through my recipes for natural insect repellents. You may want to try some of these deet free formulas. To two ounce aloe vera gel add 15 drops of emu oil(to aid with fast absorption) , 15 drops of lavender oil, 10-15 drops of peppermint oil and aprox. 20 drops of eucalyptus oil. Mix into small bottle and spread small amount on exposed areas of skin. Keep away from the eyes. It will soak in, but reapply as needed. Another sure fire thing we have used for years when going to be out camping or herb gathering is to get the peppermint castile soap and dilute with a small amount of water. Bugs just don’t like it and when you go to take a shower you are already soaped up!

A touch of tea tree oil on a bite takes the sting away.

In case you are at the beach, ammonia will take away the sting of a jellyfish.

Plantain creme helps with wasp or bee stings.

A smile makes everyone feel better.
