Gas Attendant: That is a great car you have there, mister. How many miles do you get to the gallon?
Customer: I only get about three miles to a gallon. My teenage son gets the other 20.

Two guys went hunting for bear. Along the way they saw a sign saying
"Bear left."
So they went home.

Teacher: Now, children, who can tell me what comes before March?
Johnny: Forward?

Fred: I went to a mind reader.
Fay: What happened?
Fred: She gave me my money back.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

The Drilling on the Granby Tract.

R.A. Bowen who is drilling on the Granby land at the southwest edge of town, is down 100 feet. He is still in open ground and finds favorable formation. No mineral is expected, however until a considerably greater depth is reached. Mr. Bowen has the 56 acres of Granby land on a royalty, and an option on several adjoining tracts, so that if he strikes rich stuff he will have a good thing.

C.A. Steward Got Second Prize.

C. A. Steward, of this city, carried off the second prize at the St. Louis photographer’s convention held last week. The first prize was awarded to a Mexico, Mo., photographer on a technicality. Mr. Steward’s display was an unusually fine one, and he naturally feels proud of the distinction given it. Carthage has the finest photographers in this state and wherever their work is shown it carries off honors.

Marian Days Upcoming.

The City Council heard from Police Chief Dennis Veach at last Tuesday’s meeting on the security status for the upcoming Marian Days. Marian Days is scheduled for August 5-8 this year at the Provincial Headquarters 1900 Grand Avenue.

Veach said the section of Grand Avenue that runs in front of Congregation of the Mother Coredemptrix will be closed starting Wednesday August 4 and the Police Department will have officers stationed on the grounds starting Tuesday August 3.

At the Council meeting the Public Safety Committee presented the permission letter from Congregation of the Mother Coredemptrix. This letter included the request for the spraying of grounds for mosquitos during the week of August 1, the Open Air Program from 9:00 PM to 12:00 A.M. on August 6th and 7th, traffic control for the Solemn Procession from 5:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M. on August 7th and fireworks on August 7 following the Solemn Procession. A motion was approved to accept the permission letter. Mayor Kenneth Johnson said he had already granted the Proclamation Certificate making August 5-8 Marian Days in Carthage.

artCamp Ends Saturday.

By Lee Sours

By the time you read this artCamp will be about over. Many thanks to the Boylan Foundation for making it possible to have another artCamp. We really appreciate all they do for our community.

The teachers were excellent. Altogether they probably have around 40 years teaching experience. And they have a lot of experience as artists too. The kids seemed actively focused on their projects and they enjoyed themselves in spite of learning about art, history, foreign languages, literature and cultural awareness.

The new display at Shellie’s restaurant is a display of acrylic paintings by Sharon Couch of Bixby, OK. She loves animals and her display consists primarily of animals and still life paintings of fruit. She will be teaching painting at Broken Arrow this fall. The exhibit in the Main Gallery at artCentral is a group exhibit by Studio 55, a Springfield based group. These are some excellent original paintings for very reasonable prices.

This is my last week at artCentral (sort of) and I appreciate the board. They have all made a great contribution of time and effort to promote artCentral. And thanks to the community who support artCentral in various ways such as attending events, being members or making donations. My husband and I are moving but will still be coming back to visit occasionally.

Took a walk through the almost renovated Over 60 Center the other day. Looks like they may make it back to their own buildin’ by the time snow flies.

As you prob’ly remember, the doublin’ of the size of the facility was funded mostly with state and federal grants.

What a lotta folks don’t know is that the City owns the property and the building and helps out with the utilities year to year. The City contracts with the Over 60 folks to provide this service to the community. Although the City does not pay anything for the administration, it does allow the use of the building without receivin’ any rent.

The Center, along with the low fare taxi service provided by the City, makes Carthage an attractive setting for "Seniors." I’m startin’ to like it more myself.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

By Mari An Willis

This has been like a "bonus" week. This great weather is something we can brag about. After all, we are in Missouri.

A brief explanation of the word tocopherol forms of vitamin E. There are three known tocopherols: alpha, beta and gamma. A tocopherol(sometimes listed as d-alpha-tochpherol) is the most common form in vitamin E supplements. D-alpha is natural form. Dl-alpha is a synthetic form that should be avoided for internal use. In a recent meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research scientists from the National Cancer Institute and other prominent research centers reviewed data from 300 subjects enrolled in a cancer-preventative study conducted in Finland.

In early research of the Finland data it showed that ment who took 50mg of alpha-tochpherol vit. E daily for five years reduced their prostate cancer risk by almost a third. Although supplements are good, the Vit. E you get from food may be absorbed much more easily. Some good food sources for vitamin E are sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, mustard greens, green & red peppers. All are preferable in their raw state.

Selenium has excellent antioxidant properties that have been shown to help increase the efficiency of vitamin E.
