A teenager can tell how good his stereo is by how many times the neighbors call the police.

A patient said to his doctor, "When you say that I should forget the past, does that also mean what I owe you?"

I dialed a 900 number to get some advice on my finances. It told me not to dial a 900 number.

County To Vacate Land To City.

The Jasper County Commission met Thursday morning for its regular meeting in the Carthage Courthouse. Under new business, was a petition by John and Carolyn Phelps for Jasper County to vacate platted land to the City of Carthage. The land requested to be vacated is a portion of Fairview Second Edition, south of Fairview and west of River Street.

Easter District Jasper County Commissioner Jim Honey stated that the Phelps’ have abided by guidelines and placed legal public notification in the paper.

Attorney Jim Spradling spoke to the Mornin’ Mail and stated that the platted land is an unimproved subdivision and needs to be vacated by the County in order to platt a new subdivision.

"It’s the law," said Spradling, "if the land were developed, it would go through the City. Since it is not developed, it goes through the County. The Phelps’ have filed for a new platt.

The Commissioner’s agreed to vacate the land. Presiding Jasper County Commissioner Chuck Surface stated that the Commissioner will sign the petition in a few days.

Membership Show.

By Lee Sours, artCentral

The annual Membership Show at artCentral will be held June 4 - July 9. Works from 25 – 30 artists in a variety of media are usually presented. This is one of our most fun shows. Our area artists congregate to view one another’s art, socialize, feast at the barbeque, and enjoy live music.

A cash award is presented for Best of Show. All area artists should be getting ready! If you are not a member of artCentral, stop by and pick up a membership form. The more the merrier.

We are trying to get spruced up for the season. This week was "the planting of the petunias." These petunias were obtained as a trade with the Garden Depot in Anderson. The trade involved fiddling for flowers. Speaking of flowers, drop by and see Koral Martin’s fabulous full color photography of flowers. This display is at Shellie’s restaurant just off the northwest corner of the square. These flowers are bold and beautiful and make great gifts. And they don’t have to be watered.

Don’t forget to sign up for our Traditional Arts Workshops. Carthage is a community rich in the arts and it’s a good idea to take advantage of the opportunities that presents.

Each year our local sculptor, Bill Snow, is asked to travel to other states to teach people from all over the US and Canada. And he will be teaching stone carving right here in Carthage.

We’ll be having the blacksmith workshop again this year. It was very popular last year. Jack Sours will be teaching wheel thrown pottery. Call for a registration form soon. Class sizes are limited. Workshops are for those 17 and older.

HOURS: T – F 11 - 5

Rhodiola, or goldenroot as some call it, it currently used in traditional medical systems in Asia. Rhodiola has been used in Asia for hundreds of years as a means to stimulate the nervous system, decrease low-level depression and fatigue, and even help prevent altitude sickness. Rhodiola has been studied and found to be a powerful antioxidant, support the immune system and regulate neurotransmitters that help one deal with stress and its physical and psychological effects.*

Rhodiola has been classified as an "adaptogen." The criteria for an adaptogen was established in 1947 by Russian scientist Lazarev and is still used today:

1. An adaptogen produces a non-specific response in an organise; an increase in power of resistance against multiple stressors including physical, chemical and biological agents.

2. An adaptogen has a normalizing influence on physiology, irrespective of the direction of change from physiological norms caused by the stressor.

3. An adaptogen is capable of influencing normal body functions more than required to gain non-specific resistance.

Basically, it helps the body adjust to stress.
