Sold Threshing Machine for Junk.

William Radnor, the junk dealer, has bought the old threshing machine that has stood out in the weather for five or six years, back of the Whitsett store. The machine was first run in on the Whitsett lot when put under attachment by somebody. It was the understanding at the time that it would remain there but a week or two, but nothing was ever done with it and now it is sold by Mr. Whitsett for $6 as old iron to get rent for the occupancy of the ground.

Now that this unsightly implement is out of his store’s back yard, Mr. Whitsett will clean up his premises and plant out beautiful flower beds there, he says.

Enterprise Zone Discussion.

The Public Works committee held their regular meeting Tuesday evening in City Hall. City Administrator Tom Short announced that a public hearing to expand the Enterprise Zone will be May 27th at 5 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers. Short reported that Economic Development Director Max McKnight is currently mailing out the letters of notification to local legal taxing entities. Those entities include Jasper County and the R-9 School District.

Short spoke to the Mornin Mail and stated that the expansion of the zone was to include west Fairview.

"The area of west Fairview," said Short, "and north up to the landfill, is the general area."

McKnight says that a company has been looking at Carthage for their location.

"That is the driving force behind the expansion," said McKnight. "A company is looking at Carthage, but we’re not saying who until the hearing. There will be a map of the boundaries at the meeting."

The Enterprise Zone is a state program and was established by the City of Carthage in April 1994. The purpose of the enterprise zone is to bring in industry businesses and create jobs for the community. The program includes tax incentives for those involved.

McKnight reported earlier that the Enterprise Zone can be expanded three times in twenty-five years and this will be the first expansion for Carthage.

Judgin’ from the number of commercials ya see, there must be a lotta folks out there that think they have a great idea for a patent. Surely they wouldn’t continue to offer patent advice if no one paid for the service.

There must be at least as many who aspire to become an artist. These ads used ta come in bubble gum wrappers and on match book covers, now they have full blown slick commercials on tv.

I suppose that the longevity of these commercials and others are a tribute to the power of television. People still respond to another human givin’ a pitch in the comfort of their own livin’ room.

‘Course one advantage to the consumer is they can yell at the salesman without hurtin’ his feelin’s and switch channels.

This is some fact, but mostly,

TALK CARS

By Tom and Ray Magliozzi

Dear Tom and Ray:

I own a 1990 Mazda 626 and had the brakes and rotors replaced last September. Two months later, the rotors were warped again and had to be replaced. Four months after that, I had the same situation. Can you explain why new rotors warp so quickly? We did not have this problem during the first 13 years we owned this car — Ken

TOM: To quote Shakespeare, the problem, dear Ken, is not in our rotors, but in our calipers. He said something like that, didn’t he?

RAY: If one of your calipers is sticking — holding a brake in the "on" position, even when your foot is not on the brake pedal — that would heat up a rotor and cause it to warp prematurely.

TOM: We always check the calipers when we do a brake job, to make sure that both the pistons and the slides are moving freely. I mean, why miss an opportunity to sell a customer a caliper? But the guys who did your brake job might have missed one. You could also have a faulty power-brake booster that’s applying the brakes even when you’re not. Or a restricted rubber brake hose that’s acting like a check valve and creating the same effect.

RAY: So, those are the things I’d ask the mechanic to look for, Ken. There’s no reason why new rotors — even cheap ones — should warp after only a few months unless there’s something else in play.
