You can tell you are getting older when:
Your knees buckle and your belt won’t.
You look forward to a dull evening.
Your back goes out more than you do.
Your little black book contains only names ending in M.D.

Tales of the Theatre.

The power of the theatre is not generally understood, but that it exerts on its patrons an influence can not be denied. Books may teach pernicious doctrines, lectures may gloss evils with a polish that may make them appear desirable to the young, but ninety-nine per cent of the dramas show in vivid colors that vice is always punished and virtue rewarded. This is a fact overlooked by those who decry the theatres, though it is one that requires no proof. Take for instance the great detective play, "Caught in the Web" presented at the Grand Opera House Saturday night, it is a model for boys and young men teaching them how by self-reliance, courage and manliness they can bring out a class of wrong and it will assist the youth to be honest and upright. The vice and wickedness does not pay, as it is shown clearly in this play, and that alone is sufficient recommendation for its power of good.

More Of The Same.

Large numbers of voters at the polls in Carthage and Jasper County did little to change the complexion of the political atmosphere. Republican candidates again dominated the preference of those voting and left no Democrats in County office for this term.

Coroner J.D. Love, the only Democrat holding a county office, was defeated (18,645) by former Sheriff Deputy Jerry Neil (25,4640.

Eastern County Commissioner incumbent Jim Honey (15,932) defeated the Democrat challenger Brent Erwin (6,742).

Republican Darieus Adams (14,272) won the seat of Western District Commissioner by defeating Dana Williams (6,819).

Republican Assessor Don Davis (28,864) defeated Democrat Mark Rains (14,123).

County Treasurer Jeannie Wells (30,326) retained her office by defeating former County Commissioner Ben Johnson (13,081).

Jasper County voters approved of the Missouri Constitutional amendment No. 3 by a vote of 21,376 to 15,193.

Mornin'

Those gathered at the Carthage Courthouse last evening, there weren’t really enough to call a crowd, looked tired. Those bringin’ in the ballots had seen a long day and some long lines.

Those who had campaigned for their candidates were also worn down.

Those who staffed the Oronogo polling place worked until 10 p.m. allowing over 200 voters who were in line at 7 p.m. cast their vote as instructed by the County Clerk.

The final count of all precincts didn’t come until approximately 12:30 a.m.

The age of electronic communication has taken the edge off the tradition of watchin’ results from the Courthouse. But the actual count still generates the most accurate sense of the election, and those who make it work.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip

By Jo Ann Derson

• "For an absolutely stunning thank-you card — or any kind of card, really — use appropriate photos glued to the front of a piece of folded cardstock. My neighbor used photos of all the children at her daughter’s birthday party. The cards are so adorable. I am planning on using this idea to make our family’s Christmas cards this year." — A.J. in Florida

• To get the wrinkles out of a dress shirt, hang it in the bathroom while you shower. If the bathroom gets steamy enough, the wrinkles fall right out. Note, though, that you can’t use this for all fabrics, as some can be damaged by steam.

• "As a guide, my husband hung a tennis ball on a small string from the ceiling in the garage. Now, when I pull in, I don’t have to try and gauge whether I am pulled in far enough. When the tennis ball hits my windshield, I am pulled in fine." — I.D. in Pennsylvania

• Use spent tubes from paper towels to corral your electrical cords. The cords can be wrapped around the tubes, or you can slit the tube down the side to wrangle several cords together, such as those running from a power strip to the back of your television.

• For a natural beauty treatment, mix uncooked oatmeal with two beaten egg whites. Spread on face, let set for five minutes and rinse well with warm water.

• For people without precision painting skills to get perfectly painted toenails, just paint without worrying about going over onto the skin. When dry, soak your feet for 5 to 10 minutes in warm water, and scrub lightly with a brush. The polish will come off easily from everywhere except your nails!
