Good Business at the Foundry.

New Contracts Being Booked and Force of Employees Increased.

The Carthage foundry has just received an order for 200 car wheels from the Weeks Hardware company of Carterville and has just turned out a new set of crusher rolls for the Pleasant Valley mines. The Big Kate mill machinery at Neck City, is being turned out by the foundry and is now nearly all delivered. Several other big contracts are practically assured, and things are decidedly on the boom.

Some new machinery is just being installed, and the force of employees has been increased by five within the last two weeks. The new men are C.D. Nargan, C.C. Yancey, Clyde Banks, Isaac Turner, and J. Carlin.

Public Safety Reviews Bids.

The Public Safety Committee met on Monday evening and discussed bids received by the Police and Fire Department.

Police Chief Veach recommended a bid from Carthage Ford and Mercury for 3 new patrol cars for $52,155 which is within the budget, and a bid from Martel Electronics in California for $5,040 for 2 new in-car video systems for the patrol cars. The new video systems are a higher quality camera than those currently employed in the patrol cars. Chief Veach also mentioned the preparation for an annual local law enforcement block grant which would be used in part for new LED light bars for the vehicles.

Fire Chief Cooper recommended a bid from Firemaster for new bunkers (Firefighter safety protective clothing) for $780 a set including suspenders. Chief Cooper said the department was hoping to acquire 17 total sets of bunkers funded partially by the $6,600 left over from the roof repairs to the Fire Station.

Motions were made to present all of the recommendations for approval at the next City Council meeting.

Mornin'

I learned how to use a tire gauge at an early age. After burnin’ on a patch to my bicycle inner tube, I pumped and pumped on our tire pump until I could safely ride to the service station.

That was fun, pullin’ up to the gas pumps and parkin’ to use their air hose. It was so much fun I put in a little more air. Not yet of the age to properly gauge the pounds of pressure by just feelin’ the tire, I naturally overinflated. This didn’t cause me a stiff ride however, it blew the side right out of the tire.

After pushin’ the bike back home and mournin’ the lack of a ride, I began countin’ pennies to purchase a new tire.

Since that time I’ve always hated puttin’ air in a tire without a gauge. Proper inflation is still a measurable science that anyone can learn.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip

By JoAnn Derson

• "I just purchased a house, and while looking for furniture (which I can’t afford) I saw a lovely set of patio furniture. I have a nice-size patio, but I didn’t want to blow what little money I have on outdoor stuff. But it was great, so I bought it. It’s comfortable and affordable, and I am using it indoors while I save more money for good couches, chairs and a dining table. When I get them, I will move the patio stuff outside." — R.R. in Ohio

• "I was raking up fall leaves, and I used a kiddie pool to gather them up. It’s more stable than a garbage bag, and I can dump the leaves in the bag afterward." - I.G. in N.C.

• "If you eat only part of a banana and want to save the other half, fold the peel over the exposed end and secure it with a toothpick. A lot less gets brown and mushy. Put it in the fridge for even better results. (Even if the whole outside gets brown, the inside stays fresh.)" — E.D. in Texas

• "Save plastic servingware from to-go meals. You can use it when you have company, and then you will have more time for visiting and spend less time cleaning up." — M.P. in Georgia

• "To check for leaks in your toilet tank, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank. If you can see the color in the bowl a few minutes later, your tank is leaking, and you should check the seal to make sure it is good. Put some petroleum jelly on it for a better seal, or replace it." — A Reader

• To prevent silverware from slipping through the basket in the dishwasher, get a net scrubbie and put it in the bottom of one of the compartments. It works great for straws, ice picks and filet knives.
