Library Report.

A Statement for the Month of May.

A total of 3,796 shown by this month’s statistics, indicates a gain of 474 volumes in circulation over the month of April. That this increase is confined to the class known as light reading is somewhat to be regretted, as other classes show a corresponding falling off. A decrease of about one-third in the use of history and biography is made good by the large proportion of fiction issued, 2,833 volumes.

From May 1 to June 1, 112 new cards have been issued, bringing the total number of issues up to 2,272.

Sunday attendance in reading room as follows: May 7, readers 14, visitors 18; May 14, readers 17; May 21, readers 11, visitors 8; May 28, readers 12, visitors 12.

On May 30, Decoration day, there were 13 readers during the afternoon and 21 during the evening. From 2:30 to 9 p.m. about 50 people came in to see the building.

Hospital Plans Move Forward.

The Council meeting on June 14 will contain three second readings of ordinances pertaining to the proposed construction of a new hospital building for McCune-Brooks Hospital. Items in their second reading will include Council bill 05-38 which authorizes the City of Carthage to purchase property for the purpose of constructing a new hospital facility.

Council bill 05-47 authorizes the City of Carthage to enter into an agreement for the purpose of constructing a new hospital facility, and bill 05-48 authorizes the City to obtain a line of credit for $3,000,000 to guaranty payment of Hospital’s of equity position in the bond financing for the construction of the replacement hospital.

The previous Council meeting saw the unanimous approval of an ordinance authorizing the City of Carthage to issue Hospital revenue bonds to provide funds to complete the new facility. The bonds are not to exceed $42,500,000. Council member Tom Flanigan requested that he be excused from the voting process for this ordinance, as he is the chairman of the McCune-Brooks Health Care Foundation.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin'
When it gets within a couple a weeks of the Carthage Acoustic Festival I can’t help but start watchin’ the long range forecast. As of yesterday afternoon, the forecast for June 11 was a high of 85 and a 10% chance of precipitation. Not bad odds. ‘Course the Festival goes on rain or shine. The Private Events buildin’ on the south side of the Square is reserved and ready.

This time a year doesn’t seem ta be any more predictable that any other season of couse, and weather patterns can change at the drop of a hat.

As a kid rain days had the catastrophic possibility of shuttin’ down baseball games. Nothin’ much more devastatin’ to an eleven year old than to have a game canceled. ‘Cept of course the growin’ possibility of a zit on the end of their nose.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

What about yarrow? This astringent herb has shown up as a decorative plant in many flower gardens lately. You can now see it in paprika, yellow , red, and the natural white. It has been used to stop bleeding since the Trojan war when Achilles used it on his soldiers. That is where the generic name Achillea is derived. In Culpeper’s journals it is noted for use in swelling and wounds. It appeared in the US Pharmacopeia during the 19th century. In the 1950’s an alkaloid was found to promote blood clotting and stimulate new cell growth; thus, it promotes healing of cuts, wounds and burns by protecting against infection.

My favorite use of yarrow is in the winter for colds, flu and fevers. In an infusion (tea), it certainly displays its bitter properties, but that is why it works so well. The fever tea is combined with a little honey and cayenne pepper. I have had people tell me drinking it when you see the first chicken pox pop out or the measles will decrease the length and severity of the skin eruptions. Although bitter, chewing the leaves may help a toothache. I also read that you can use it as a hair rinse to stop hair loss.

I had to trim my sage this week. It’s growth has been about as rapid as the weeds. The leaves make a nice tea to aid the digestive process and of course, one could dry it and have plenty for spicing up dressing and other dishes.

artCentral BBQ and Members Show tonight

If you think art openings are stuffy affairs, populated by aloof sophisticated cognoscenti, then you haven’t yet attended an artCentral Annual Membership Exhibition.

This is a fun evening of great home cooking, Celtic and Old Timey toe-tapping music, and, of course, a fantastic variety of fine art by the members of artCentral!

In additional to enjoying a multitude of media—paintings in watercolor, acrylic and oil; sculptures in wood and stone; smoked, fired, and raku pottery; contemporary and antique jewelry; digital and traditional photography; and hand weaving—you’ll meet the most interesting folks! The workshop attendees who began working at 8am that morning on their stone sculpture, blacksmithing projects, and ceramic designs will be there, relaxing after a full and fulfilling day. The 38 artists represented in the show will be checking out who won the First, Second and Third Place prizes, while art aficionados can admire the 70 originals on display in the Main Gallery and work by the Adult Workshops teachers Bill Snow, Joe Davis, and Jack Sours in the upstairs Members Gallery.

Out on the grounds of Hyde House, Board President Don Knost will man the grill while artCentral Board members make sure the side dishes are regularly replenished.

When is this artCentral fete champetre? It’s tonight, from 6-8pm. Bring a lawn chair if you have one and plan to enjoy! artCentral is located at 1110 East 13th. This event is free and open to the public. The Membership Exhibit continues thru July 8.
