Reports That Natural Gas Will Kill House Plants and Ruin Wall Paper Denied.

The report that the use of natural gas will prevent raising house plants and ruin wall paper is denied by Mr. Brainard, superintendent of the Carthage gas works. He says all gas stoves must have the proper outside ventilation and with this provided, there is no more unhealthful results from burning gas than from burning wood.

"Any stove must be connected with a chimney to remove the carbonic acid gas and other poison gases arising from combustion," he said, "and the same is true of gas stoves. With proper ventilating connections gas is as harmless to plant life in a room as coal or wood fires."

Sunken places at Fourth and Main street corner are being filled with cobble stones which will be graded over with gravel.

Will Not Support the Tax.

The proposed Jasper County Law Enforcement sales tax will not have the support of the City Council Budget Ways and Means Committee. The currently elevated tax levels were cited as a primary reason that the committee voted to oppose the new tax.

The committee also discussed the first quarter budget report at the meeting Monday evening.

City Administrator Tom Short told the committee that the revenues in the general fund are $72,000 above the same time last year. Short told the committee that the increase is due in part to the Parks department. This included increased annual fees at the golf course. Short cited several large construction projects also as helping the revenues. According to Short, permit fees were received for large-scale construction projects at Schreiber Foods Inc., H.E. Williams, and the renovation of the Drake Hotel.

All of the sudden, I look around and there must be a dozen or two different kinds a crackers and this and that. All different kinds a cheeses, bacon, and jalepeno. the whole world is goin’ crackers.

Used ta be we’d make our own fillin’s to go ‘tween a couple a crackers. Peanut butter and Karo syrup was the standard. Spreadin’ it on soda crackers just seemed to have that right blend of salt and straight corn syrup with the additional attraction of stickin’ to the roof of your mouth.

‘Course sometimes that’d end up ‘tween a couple slice of that pure white bread most of us grew up on.

They’ve even started sellin’ soda crackers that don’t have salt on ‘em. guess ya salt your own.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
by JoAnn Derson

• Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours.

• "I am a senior on a budget, but I love to get presents for people. Throughout the year, I have a small weekly amount I set aside for ‘fun shopping,’ and I hit the clearance sections of department stores. I have found nice stationary items for less than a dollar and quality children’s clothes for $2 or $3 for a whole outfit. I always buy the size I would be buying at the holidays or the child’s birthday, and I give large for less! Plus, it’s a great way to spend time, since I have a lot more of that than I have dollars." — L.A. in Georgia

• To fix a sticky zipper, try running a candle along the zipper face, then zipping it up and down a few times.

• "The back of my clipboard broke, but the clip part was working just fine, so I attached it to the inside of my kitchen cabinet with double-sided tape. I use it to hold my grocery list or a recipe card when I am baking. Just close the cabinet and it’s out of view." — C.U. in Colorado

• "Most children have an excess of toys — so many that sometimes they don’t even play with them all. I rotate my children’s toys so that every month, there is something ‘new’ to play with." — S.K. in Minnesota

• Be sure to check the prices of life insurance again if things in your life have changed — maybe you are in better physical shape, you’ve quit smoking or the kids have grown up. You might be surprised at how much money you could save.
