I have a cheese shredder at home, which is its positive name. They don’t call it by its negative name, which is sponge ruiner. Because I wanted to clean it, and now I have little bits of sponge that would melt easily over tortilla chips. - Mitch Hedberg

One hundred and ninety-one Carthage people took advantage of the White River excursion to Galena this morning.

The special train arrived here from Joplin at 7:30 o’clock having about 75 passengers from Joplin and intermediate points. The train was composed of ten coaches and it was expected that they would be filled at towns between here and Aurora where low rates would also be in effect. The train will arrive back in Carthage about 9:30 tonight.

The recent cleaning up order of the City Council - a little late for summer ‘tis true - has resulted in a general cleaning up of the allies at the rear of the stores. It is said that the City Council proposes ordering all business houses connected with the sewers.

I’d say a person’s automobile is one of the largest producers of paper of ‘bout anything else goin’. If ya don’t think all those papers are important, just lose one someday and see how much sympathy ya get tryin’ ta get by without it. It doesn’t count if you’ve got 90% of it. If one little detail is missin’ that’s all that counts. Ever’ detail is worth about 5 to 14 days delay. I bet that doesn’t count the time spent on the phone and the trips to and from whatever agency or department you’ve got ta make. Not ta mention the fact that the letter ya get from the agency tells ya they can receive a fax but after ya go through the procedure they send ya a letter tellin’ ya how sorry they are but they can’t use a fax copy. I’m not sayin’ that anything like this has ever happened to me, but I bet I’d write somethin’ ‘bout it if it ever did.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Chaparral is botanically known as Larrea tridentata and has the most common names of Greasewood and Creosote. It is one of the world’s oldest plants and flourishes in the arid Arizona desert.

Like so many desert plants, Chaparral produces strong anti-stress saponins and other protective agents. One of these natural compounds is NDGA, and thought responsible for the therapeutic benefits attributed to chaparral.

NDGA (nor-dihydroguaiaretic acid) has been identified as an antioxidant and useful in negating the effects of free radicals in the tissues and cells.

Researchers at the Universities of Nevada and Utah isolated NDGA from the leaves of a Chaparral plant after a cancer victim was miraculously cured. The 87 year old patient began consuming chaparral daily and in a few short months cured a facial cancer.

Dr. Ronald Pardinia of the University of Nevada indicated the NDGA was a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial enzymes which in turn inhibit the cancer growth. And because of its negating effect on free radicals Chaparral has other applications. Free radicals can break down the lubricating synovial fluid in joints resulting in a loss of lubricity and subsequent inflammation. Deterioration of synovial fluid is a classic symptom associated with inflammatory arthritis.

artCentral seeks "a little something" for silent auction

I have been happily involved with nonprofit organizations for over 30 years. Yet the one "duty" I prefer to avoid is fundraising.

However, when it comes to asking folks to donate "a little something" as a Silent Auction item for artCentral’s Maple Leaf Wine Tasting Extravaganza scheduled for Sunday, October 9, I am giddy to do so. How can that be, you ask?

First, this event is artCentral’s one-and-only annual fundraiser, and a fun -filled, fabulous feast, fine art occasion for sure!

Secondly, the items that come in the door for the Silent Auction are just so interesting. My favorites last year were the antique golf club, a vintage Frankoma bowl, a basket of wonderful hand picked wines, and a fanciful birdhouse. Several local merchants gave generous gift certificates and premium merchandize, and artCentral members donated art and craft originals.

Of course, the real fun begins at the Extravaganza, with bidders cruisin’ and perusin’ auction items all afternoon, until the final bell at 4:30. Then it’s a blast to see who got what, for how much.

Perhaps you have something odd, unusual, unique—an antique, a collectible, a piece of jewelry, a no longer needed treasure that you are willing to part with, or an inherited item you’d love to pass on for a good cause. Please give us a call 358-4404 and we’ll be happy—and grateful— to receive it. Then plan to attend the Maple Leaf Wine Tasting Extravaganza, and see what there’s to bid on!
