I drove past a gas station the other day. There were two signs in the window: "Help wanted," "Self Service." So I went in and hired myself. Made myself the boss. I took all the money and I left. - Steven Wright

Didn’t Play Poker.

Ol Hart and George Rogers Woke up the Wrong Man - Trial Set for Wednesday.

Ol Hart and George Rogers were looking for a poker game Saturday night about 1 o’clock. They had an idea that a game could be found in the little grocery building on Central avenue at the end of Howard. So they went in search.

But Asa Grider has recently bought the stock, and whatever knowledge he may have of a poker game is not manifested by a game in the back end of his store. The sporting gentlemen didn’t know all this and when they pounded on the door at the unseemly hour Sunday morning Mr Grider got up and asked what they wanted; They told him and would not be convinced that he was not running a poker game. He finally called the officers and Hart and Rogers were taken to the lockup on a charge of disturbing Mr. Grider’s peace.

Both gave bond in the sum of $25 and will appear for trial Wednesday morning.

Chainsaw Safety and Pruning Workshop.

News release

With fall approaching and many considering using firewood for heating and/or pruning their trees, the tool of choice, for many, will be a chainsaw. While an appropriate tool for these jobs, it is also an extremely dangerous one, not only to the operator, but also to the tree. With this in mind, the Carthage Tree Advisory Board, Carthage Parks and Recreation Department, Kellogg Lake Spring River Development, and the Missouri Department of Conservation have joined forces to offer this workshop.

Proper pruning techniques, chainsaw safety, and tree felling will be presented. The workshop will be held at Kellogg Lake, east of Carthage on Highway 96. The program will start at 10:30 a.m. and runs until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2005. A beans and cornbread lunch will be provided.

A $5.00 registration is required. Make checks payable to Kellogg Lake Spring River Development and mail or deliver to Carthage Parks and Recreation Department, 521 Robert Ellis Young Dr., Carthage, MO.

Mornin
I made a startlin’ discovery the other day. I needed a piece of string. As I dug through this drawer and that, the realization that there was not a decent length of string in the house struck me. How could I have overlooked stockin’ up on such an essential household item?

We’ve all seen those big balls of string collected and sittin’ on display. All I needed was a couple a foot decent sized string.

I suppose it happened durin’ one of those clear-out-the-junk frenzies that happens ever few years. That last bit a string was thrown out with that bold I was lookin’ for the other day and couldn’t find. Apparently my junk drawers have been neglected and need restockin’.

I’m makin’ a list.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Painting a Dorm Room

Q: I moved into my first dorm room earlier this month, and my roommate and I have decided that the drab beige walls have got to go. What’s the fastest way to paint a room (without damaging the furniture, since we paid a deposit)? — Kate B., Carrollton, Ga.

A: Before you start, check the college’s rules on remodeling dorm rooms — you may have to clear the paint project with your RA or another school official.

Preparing the room to paint is the key to getting the job done quickly. In the days leading up to the job, clear away clutter and remove posters and pictures from the wall. Wipe away dust and dirt from windowsills, wall molding and door frames.

Measure the square footage of the wall area to be painted (for example, if a wall is 13 feet wide and 11 feet high, multiply those two figures together to equal 143 square feet). A gallon of latex paint covers about 350 square feet, so the measurements are important to make sure you buy the right amount.

Head to the home-improvement store a day beforehand. Select your paint color and the amount to buy, and while the paint is being mixed, buy the other items you’ll need. These include blue painter’s tape (to mask off areas you don’t want painted), a metal roller and extension pole, roller covers and tray, dropcloths and a paint shield. Pick two trim brushes, one angled and one straight, for painting into corners and along the trim. Toss in a screwdriver, a scraper/putty knife, cleaning rags, a bucket and sponge, and stirring sticks (available for free at the mixing counter).

The day of the project, move all the furniture out of your dorm room. If that’s not possible, shift it all to the middle of the room and cover with dropcloths and old sheets. Finish masking off and cleaning the paint area. Open the first paint can and stir well to mix. Carefully pour the paint into the roller tray, about a half-inch deep. Push the roller across the tray to collect paint, and roll paint onto the wall, going up-and-down first and then side-to-side.

Use the trim brushes to paint into the corners without getting splotches in the wrong place, like the ceiling. If this happens, keep a damp rag close by to immediately wipe away the error.

A small dorm room, prepped beforehand, should take only an hour to paint. Additional coats will take more time. Be sure to keep the room well-ventilated for at least three hours while the paint dries.
