A God-Send From Heaven.

Rain Checked a Forest Fire Which Endangered Lakeside Cottages.

A menacing forest fire raged for two hours near Lakeside park Monday night and was finally checked only by what its fighters term a God-send from heaven - a down-pour of rain.

The fire started mysteriously in the dry grass along the electric line’s right of way just south of the park. A brisk wind from the northeast swept the flames rapidly towards the row of dwelling houses occupied by electric line employees. Strangely enough the fire was not discovered until it had crept up into the forest and was perilously near some of the houses. The people turned out and the men, women and children fought the flames fiercely for an hour but utterly failed to quench the fire though at east two houses were saved by their efforts. Suddenly the heavens opened and a deluge of rain made short work of the flames. Two electric line poles were burned in two and fences destroyed.

Citizen Commendation and Update.

Suspects Thomas Joel Maggard and Arleen Frances Wolfe are still being held in Carthage jail on warrants of bank robbery from California and pending warrants from Carthage. The two were taken into custody on February 7, in connection with the robbery of UMB Bank at Garrison and Fairview.

Police Chief Dennis Veach has presented a citizen’s commendation award to Assistant Manager of Pizza Hut Christopher Patel who provided the Police with descriptions of the vehicle used by the two suspects after the robbery.

According to Veach, Patel was leaving his place of business when he noticed the suspects getting into a truck on the Pizza Hut parking lot. Patel was suspicious and circled back for a second view of the suspects, witnessing the truck leaving the parking lot. Due to the attention paid Patel was able to provide an accurate description to the Carthage Police Department. The information was broadcast to all law enforcement agencies in Southwest Missouri and fifteen minutes later a Jasper County Deputy Sheriff and Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper saw the vehicle described and apprehended the suspects.

I still have some reservations about makin’ kid medicine taste good. ‘Course in my mind, I still figure it didn’t taste near as good as the commercials would leave ya to believe. I’ve had occasion to taste some a those protein drinks that are supposed to be so great, they don’t taste so good to me.

It gets down to I just don’t trust any medicine that doesn’t make ya cringe a little. Ya put ’ on a cut, ya want it to sting a little so ya know it’s workin’.

I also don’t care for the flavored versions of the plop-plop-fizz-fizz remedies. they’ve tried a lemon and a cherry flavor, I don’t like either. At least when ya swig down a dose of the original, that sweet taste doesn’t hang around in your mouth for a couple hours.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
By JoAnn Derson

• "I find that the ‘new skin’ liquid bandages really help cold sores and take the discomfort away immediately." -- D.M. in New York

• "If the cane seats on your chairs are sagging, soak them with hot water and allow them to dry in the sun. They’ll shrink back to size!" -- A Reader in Arkansas

• "After baking cookies, place a half to a whole piece of any kind of bread in with them. Even if the cookies were made a couple of days before, the bread will really soften them right up. It works every time." -- N.O. in Colorado

• "To avoid washing your George Foreman and GT Express 101 grills, cover with the new nonstick foil (Release). If you want grill marks, use your fingers to push the foil into the grooves (before plugging it in). I put wieners and potatoes in the grooves and wrap veggies, fish and meat completely with foil to retain lots of moisture and/or sauces." -- C.M., via e-mail

• "When your bananas start to turn brown, put them in a zip-lock bag in the refrigerator. They will keep for a number of days. The peels may turn brown, but the bananas will be as firm as they were when you bought them. I know (it works), because I’ve tried it myself." -- N.S. in Indiana
