Tunneling From Jail.

Frank Carter, of Carthage and a Fellow Prisoner Planned a Daring Escape.

Frank Carter, the Carthage young man, held in the county jail at Neosho charged with being implicated in the Tipton Ford postoffice robbery, made a daring attempt at escape early Wednesday morning.

Carter and a fellow prisoner named Joe Brown, said to be wanted for a robbery in Alba, were caught in the act of tunneling under the walls of the prison. They used only a butcher knife. It appeared that the men had been at work on their means of escape for some time. First they cut a square hole in the steel flooring of their cell and dug away the cement beneath. Then it was but a few feet out under the walls. The men were but a short way from freedom when the sheriff attracted by an unusual noise investigated and discovered the plot. The men had hidden the dirt from their tunnel in their beds.

Appreciation Dinner On Tap.

News release

The Carthage Chamber of Commerce, Carthage R-9 School District and St. John’s Regional Medical Center will host a T.I.G.E.R. (Together In Getting Everyone to Read) Reading Track Appreciation Dinner on Monday, March 13 from 6PM-7:30PM at the Carthage Junior High School Cafeteria. All mentors, students and their families, school administrators and Carthage Chamber Business & Education Committee members are invited to attend.

"We had 20 matches the first semester and 19 matches the second semester," said Carol Smith, Program Director. "The T.I.G.E.R. Reading planning team feels that we really had a chance to help students bond with an adult who could not only be a positive role model, but also teach them some very important reading and writing skills that will allow them to perform better in the classroom and on future MAP tests."

The T.I.G.E.R. Reading Track program is a 24-week coaching program designed to help improve 7th grade student achievement in reading. The Carthage R-9 School District designed and initiated this program to assist the Junior High 7th grade students who are most at risk. Nearly 30 adult mentors answered the call for volunteers and were paired with local students.

The outcome of the program’s first year is already evident claims Lynne DeVrieze, 7th grade Language Arts teacher. "I have noticed a tremendous difference in two of my students’ classroom performances. Both girls are doing their assignments and have developed a confidence that is helping them perform at a much higher level. One even made a100% on last week’s spelling test! Having someone take a moment in his or her busy day to spend one-on-one time with these students has more of an impact than we could ever imagine! Thank you for providing these positive role models!"

The T.I.G.E.R. Reading Track Program helps the entire Carthage community by taking a proactive approach to helping students who are not performing at their grade level. It also helps the community by strengthening the educational foundation at a young age. This, in turn, supplies our community with a qualified workforce and more productive citizens. Sometimes I wonder if they don’t predict rain just ‘cause that’s what folks wanna hear. The little dab of moisture we were allotted from the clouds over the last day or so was appreciated, but I didn’t pull out the umbrella.

I did actually have ta step over a little stream of water runnin’ down the curb. It was curious seein’ the liquid rushin’ down the street. It’s been a while. From what I’m seein’, it’ll be another week before we get another shot at eliminatin’ the dry spell.

I did notice the appearance of relief on the damp faces of some yesterday. Just the hope of a week long drizzle put a sparkle in the eye. People were talkin’ about the rain and smilin’.

Hopefully soon we can all enjoy a good belly laugh around the rain barrel.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Blood sugar disorders are nothing to fool around with. A blood sugar imbalance is not always easy to recognize, but a simple blood test can help you determine if your are having a problem. If so, treat it!

Some supplements which may be helpful in normalizing blood sugar levels include:

•chronium..to help the body respond to insulin

• fiber supplements such as psyllium or bran (with lots of water)

• Vitamin B complex to help regulate carbohydrate metabolism

• it has also been noted that many diabetics are low in magnesium

Herbal supplements which have been helpful for hypoglycemia may include:

• Spirulina between meals to keep sugar stabilized

• gymnema sylvestre has been proven effective for improving sugar control and cravings

• Siberian Ginseng to strengthen the adrenal glands

• Pancreatic enzymesa are available in capsule form and many of my customers swear by them. If one chooses to watch sugar, alcohol and fruit juice intake along with other dietary considerations and exercise you may eliminate a potentially serious problem which will have long term effects on the body. There are herbal and nutritional combinations available which may make the process easier. A nice lavender, eucalyptus or geranium bath or massage may help alleviate some of the tensions associated with hypoglycemia.
