today's laugh

A man walked into a lawyer’s office and inquired about the lawyer’s rates.
"Fifty dollars for three questions," replied the lawyer.
"Isn’t that awfully steep?" asked the man.
"Yes," the lawyer replied, "and what was your third question?"

It is better to live rich than to die rich.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

In Society.

The opening dance of the Owl club given a Lakeside last night was an enjoyable event. Everything that was needed to make it such was there. The floor was in excellent condition, the night perfect and the dancers, if possible, danced better than ever. The club is to have bi-weekly dances during the season. The Melrose club of Joplin has invited the Owls of this city and the Carnations of Webb City to their dance which is to be given at Lakeside next Thursday evening and in this way the dancers will get weekly dances.

A Dynamite Charivari.

At the weddintg of Ralph Bradford of Wichita and Miss Myrtle Peters last night at the bride’s home in Quaker Valley near Galena, Kan., a charivari party followed to the train and fired pistols and set off a stick of dynamite that blew the windows out of the Katy train at Varck and caused passengers to fear a hold-up.

Plus, every young angler that registers at the event and attends two education stations will be eligible for the prize giveaways including the grand prizes that the Carthage Wal-Mart Supercenter has donated. The City of Carthage, MAKO FlyFishers, and several local groups and businesses will assist with the event. There is NO pre-registration for this event but everyone needs to bring their own fishing poles and tackle. Worms will be provided. Volunteers are needed. No Stench Detected on Carthage Square

Mornin',
So far I’ve lost all battles of the strawberry war. The score so far is varmints 3, me none. The critters don’t even have the decency just to eat the plant and get it over with. Instead, they wait until just a day before ripeness and eat just the red portion of the immature fruit. Drives me nuts.

A fortress of old screen doors is bein’ planned and construction should begin soon.

I haven’t actually seen the scavengers committin’ their evil deed, but have watched as that pair of feathered reconnaissance operators carefully tested the defenses. They may be entirely innocent, but they look like pretty shady characters from my vantage point on the porch swing. My first hope, the dog, has no interest in guardin’ the garden. Or, maybe it has seen the enemy. Strawberry snatchin’ must be a terrible, scary thing to witness.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

• "Too much fat floating on your soup? After your soup is done, let it stand for a few minutes. Then take a clean napkin or a piece of paper towel and simply lay it on top of the soup. Presto! The grease goes to the paper. Take a fork, lift the paper off and discard." -- A.R. in California

• To remove hard water stains and mineral deposits on your shower head, fill a zip-lock baggie halfway with warm vinegar. Immerse the showerhead in the baggie and secure it to the pipe with a rubber band. Let it hang for an hour or so, then release the bag and scrub the showerhead with a soft toothbrush.

• "If you need to work on your bathroom fixtures and are going to be using a pipe wrench, make sure you wrap the fixture first to avoid scratches. I like using masking tape, as it comes off easily and helps with the grip." -- C.C. in Kansas

• Here’s a great idea for picnics: "Use a short piece of garden hose that is slit down one side as a guard for sharp knives you take along in your picnic basket. No one will reach in and accidentally get a cut." -- L.J. in North Carolina

• Another picnic hint: Small ice chests aren’t just for cold drinks. Wash one thoroughly and use it to take hot items like freshly cooked baked beans or macaroni and cheese to the park or other picnic site. Spoon food directly into the cooler and secure the lid closed, and remember to pack a serving spoon.
