Goes To Pest House Tonight.

Last Smallpox Case at County Jail is That of Alex Mimma.

The last case of smallpox which appeared at the jail and which has been held there for a day or two, will be removed to the pest house tonight where it can be better handled. The patient is Alex Mimma of this city who is under sentence of three years in the state penitentiary for committing burglary at the store of the Richardson Grocery Co. the past winter.

Sheriff Marrs has been in communication with the county court for a day or two as to the matter of expense and secured an order from the court to handle these cases in the way he considered best for the public good and for the best interest of the patients concerned, what ever the expense might be.

In the meanwhile, Mimma has been entirely isolated from the rest of the inmates of the jail and has been given every attention for his comfort and for the proper treatment of the disease with which he is afflicted. No other cases of smallpox have appeared at the jail for a few days.

No clue has been secured as to the whereabouts of the prisoners who escaped from the pest house recently.

Approved Closure for Fishing Day.

The City Council Public Services Committee met Monday evening in a regular session. The committee approved the closure of Kellogg Lake for Kid’s Fishing Day, scheduled for June 10. The lake will be closed from the 7th through the 10th in preparation for the event. The item will be forwarded to City Council at the next meeting.

The committee also discussed rate adjustments for the golf course. Proposed adjustments include single membership price increase from $475 to $525 and couple membership increase from $725 to $800. The committee agreed that it would be better to leave the daily greens fees the same after much discussion about the impact of changing rates. A motion was made to forward the adjustments, effective September 1, 2006, to City Council for consideration.

City Administrator Tom Short spoke briefly about bids for the City firework display. Four bids were received, two of which met the specifications required, but Short said that some of the items on the bid sheets needed clarification for proper comparison. The committee agreed to hold a special meeting on Friday to further discuss the bids.

Mornin',

It’s the annual "justify your existence" exercise for City departments, or as it is known in the political world, the Budget Process. The initial phase is windin’ down and now it gets down to the nitty gritty, prunin’ down the couple hunderd thousand or so that is actually available for discretionary spendin’.

‘Course most of the budget is spent on personnel and various equipment needed to provide basic services. The only way to cut any major chunks out of the budget would be to drastically reduce the level of service bein’ currently provided. Not much support for that. Even the humorous mention of sellin’ off a portion of the parks system at a recent Council meetin’ ruffled some feathers. This time a year most of those involved in the "process" take it serious.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
By JoAnn Derson

• For a sore throat, forget all those expensive syrups and drops in the store. You can mix together a quarter cup of vinegar with a quarter cup of honey and take one tablespoon of the mixture six times a day. It’s easy, it works and it’s really inexpensive.

• "I am a bingo player, and I noticed that there are many sheets of blank paper on the backs of the packages (of bingo cards). I used to collect them from whomever didn’t want them, and I took them home for my young grandchildren to color on, draw on and waste all they wanted, instead of buying special paper or coloring books to ruin. The kids seemed to be pleased, and it made me happy also." -- E.D. in Alaska

• "To eliminate a time-consuming job in chopping walnuts, put a handful in a little plastic bag, hold the bag shut, place on a countertop and pound the bag with a rolling pin to get them to the size you want." -- B.J.C. in Oregon

• Here’s a fun idea, especially when mailing a birthday gift to a child. Use balloons as packaging material. Don’t blow them up to capacity, only about three-quarters of the way. Then stuff them in the box around whatever you’re mailing.

• "If you are cooking chicken for dinner, why not cook two? I always cook two chickens at once, since I save on prep time and cooking time. When the chickens are done, we have one for dinner and the other gets cut up to use on salads or in lunches. It makes a great change from regular lunch meats." -- P.L. in Georgia

• Got toenail fungus? Try treating it with Listerine mouthwash. Soak a cotton ball in Listerine and apply it to the nails several times a day until the nails clear up. -- A.A. via e-mail
