What the Switch Will be Used for.

The new Missouri Pacific switch north of Carthage is to be located about one and one-half miles north of town.

Just north of Carthage there is a heavy grade, which is very stiff for heavy north bound trains. The Joplin and Carthage switch engine which plies between the towns will haul out all loaded freight cars from Carthage onto the new switch. The north bound trains will then get the heavy cars of stone, etc., at the top of the stiff grade, and will not be compelled to pull them up. This knocks out the theory that the prime purpose of putting in the switch was to provide a place for trains to pass.

It has been suggested that the Pacific in building this switch had in mind the placing of a block across the pathway of the proposed P. & G. spur up Spring river valley, but if it is located as far north of town as is now contemplated, it would, of course have no effect on the P. & G.

Steadley Backs Girls Softball Complex.

The Budget/Ways and Means Committee was informed last Thursday night by Park Board member Richard Campbell that Steadley Trust had agreed to grant $1.5 million to expand the Fair Acres Sports Complex. The grant would be comprised of ten annual installments of $150,000. The City would have to complete the project in the near future and arrange for financing that would use the annual payments to retire the debt.

Park Superintendent Alan Bull recently compiled an estimate of costs for the project of just over $1 million. The plans include a new girls softball complex, parking lots, utility fields for soccer and other activities, fencing and lighting. A walking trail was also included in the plans.

According to Bull, arrangements have been made to have initial ground work for the project completed by the National Guard as part of their training. The resulting savings could allow for other additional improvements.

The initial ground work on the expansion could begin early this summer according to the Parks and Recreation office.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

An idea for the short term use of the Myers Park Memorial Airport has been submitted to the City Council by Loren Barnett. He wants to use the abandoned airstrip as a driver training/education facility. He proposes usin’ the property as a test market for a permanent driving course at another location near Carthage.

Accordin’ to Barnett, the R-9 School district has shown interest in usin’ the grounds for drivin’ ed classes and emergency vehicle personnel have also seemed receptive.

He presented the plan to the Public Safety Committee last week and appeared ta get a favorable response. He plans ta show up at the Council meetin’ tomorrow and answer any questions.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

In the home fix-it game, accuracy can make the difference between success and failure. When you need to drill a perfectly horizontal hole, you can eyeball it if you’re good at that sort of thing, but most of us aren’t that accurate. That’s why it’s a good idea to use a level. By taping a small level right to your drill, you can be sure of better results, There are all different types of drills, and so you should use a square to help you fit a line level to your drill. It could make the difference in a precise bore and a new scrap of wood.

Dear Al & Kelly : I have a lamp that fell to the floor when I tried to move the table without removing it first. The bulb broke, leaving the socket still in place, and I couldn’t get the base out to change the bulb. First I unplugged it, because I knew I didn’t want to get shocked. I found a wine cork, pushed it down into the base of the old socket and was able to turn it out with the cork. I hope I don’t have to do that again, but if anyone else does, this method works quite well.-D.C.

SUPER HINT-If the batteries in your flashlight don’t fit tightly enough, causing the light to go out when you try to use it, you might try wrapping the batteries in some thin cardboard. This secures them in place and keeps the light on for you.
