Mrs. Brown-"She told me that you told her the secret I told you not to tell her."

Mrs. Green-" The mean thing! I told her not to tell you I told her."

Mrs. Brown-"Well, don't tell her that I told you she told me."

Tommy had been playing with his sister in the garden, and their screams had attracted mother. "What are you doing children?" she asked.

"We're playing Indians, mummy, and I'm scalping Betty," replied Tommy.

"You're doing what?"

"Oh, I'm not really scalping her properly-just taking her hair off with the shears!"

With a grinding of brakes the officer pulled up his motor car and shouted to a little boy playing in the field:"I say, sonny, have you seen an airplane come down anywhere near here?"

"No, sir!" replied the boy, trying to hide his sling shot. "I've only been shooting at that bottle on the fence."

Their Horse Died.

The camping party which left here, yesterday morning for McDonald county, met with bad luck before noon. One of the teams had been hired at Frank Havens' livery barn, and yesterday evening a telephone message came from John Gray from Neosho, saying that one of the horses had died sixteen miles out of Carthage. Arthur Havens started at once with another horse to catch the party where the misfortune overtook them. The death of the horse is supposed to have resulted from the excessive heat yesterday morning in spite of the rain.

Carthage Boy at Santiago

Frank Shaffer, an old Carthage boy, was at the siege of Santiago de Cuba. He attended the college in Carthage, though his folks now reside near Prosperity. From Carthage he went to Springfield, Ohio, to attend college, and at the breaking out of the war he joined the 8th Ohio Volunteers and was soon sent to Cuba

Police Chief Salary Recommended.

The Public Safety Committee voted Monday evening at a special meeting to approve recommended conditions for employment of the new Police Chief. Dennis Veach of Columbia, Missouri has been recommended for the position.

The recommended conditions include an effective date of employment of September 1, 1998. The Committee is recommending a salary of $41,450 and a vehicle allowance of $200 per month. Normal moving expenses of up to $3,000 will be reimbursed upon submission of actual invoices.

In other action the Committee voted 2-1 to recommend that the Square be closed to traffic Sunday evening, August 23 as requested by the Carthage Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Director Heather Kelly explained that over two hundred tour industry individuals will be brought to the Square to showcase Carthage and its attractions. The event, which will include a ‘treasure hunt’ in various shops around the Square, is scheduled last for three hours before the group moves to Precious Moments to attend the Fountain of Angels.

Mornin',

Once again the community is essentially unaffected in any significant way by the passin' of Marian Days. This doesn't mean there were not benefits derived from the event or that there was not a large amount of effort expended by the various departments of the City.

What I mean is as an individual citizen, the only inconvenience I was exposed to was a little slow down of traffic on Grand. Not bad considerin' the fact that the town grew to about five times its normal size for a few days.

Once again it was confirmed that cooperation between the organizers of the event and the various City departments and law enforcement agencies can result in a successful and noncontroversial conclusion.

A special hats off to Captain Davis acting in his role as interim Police Chief, and the entire staff at Carthage P.D.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Intro to the Internet

There are a lot of great reasons to use the Internet. Here’s a couple of reasons why most people spend time on-line.

* Electronic Mail- Ask anyone who uses it and they’ll tell you life wouldn’t be the same without it . Electronic Mail ( or E/Mail) is a great way of communicating on the Internet. Not only can you send and receive letters but you can also attach documents ( files, ect.) to your messages.

* Research - The Internet holds an enormous amount of information from all corners of the earth. You can access on-line Encyclopedias, Libraries, Ect. to gain information on almost any topic you might be looking for. Once you find that information, you can print it (as well as any pictures you might see) or save it to a disk.

* Business - Look up telephone numbers in an interactive phone book, access competitor sites, track UPS of Fedex packages, plan a business trip, or simply order a pizza on-line. The list of things that could help you at work is endless!

* Advertising - for a small fee you can put your own company on-line! Advertise your product where up to 50 million people could have access to it.

* Internet communications - Create a secure (employee only) Internet site where you could store data and information useful to your employees.
