"That sure was a dirty dig."

"What was that?"

"I showed her a picture of myself as a little boy sitting on my father's knee and she said, 'My, who's the ventriloquist?'"

"I've had so many troubles, my dear, that this year I've grown six months older."

"Good heavens, Mrs. Bevan! Whatever happened to you?"

"Last night my husband dreamt he was being arrested."

Two can live as cheaply as one - as long as one of them doesn't eat.

He: "I tore up that poem I wrote last week."

She: "Why, that's the best thing you ever did."

"You big bum, why don't you join the Navy."

"Aw, heck, who wants to be an Admiral?"

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Squirrels for Court House Yard.

Mayor Harrington has secured a permit from the county court and will place a number of squirrels in the Maple trees around the court house. Ellis Jackson will put in a wire netting tomorrow to keep the animals at home for a few days in one of the trees just south of the east court house walk. Four squirrels will be placed there at once and others will be added as soon as they can be secured. Mayor Harrington has had four of them locked up in his store room at the hotel, waiting for the permit from the county court, which was secured yesterday.

Of the eight squirrels placed in the city park by Mayor Harrington, three gray ones have run away, but five of them are still there and are making themselves at home quite nicely.

The city marshal is having the weeds in the street cut down. Let the good work go on.

Downtown Showcase.

Preparations are being made by merchants on and around the Square for the "Missouri Showcase" to take place this Sunday on the Carthage Square. The event will bring over two hundred representatives of tour bus operators and tour suppliers and is sponsored by the Carthage Chamber of Commerce.

Main Street Carthage is also encouraging downtown businesses to "spruce up" the Square by getting windows cleaned, grass and weeds trimmed from along sidewalks, and back entrances cleaned up.

The Chamber is also sponsoring a treasure hunt that will encourage the visitors to go into shops around the Square and look for "hidden treasures" of Carthage. Several shop owners have agreed to donate prizes that will be awarded. The activities take place from approximately 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. this coming Sunday. The City Council allowed the square to be closed to traffic during that time period to accommodate the showcase.

The "Missouri Showcase" is intended to promote tourism in the area and allow businesses to be recognized in the tourism industry.

Mornin',

I think it's a good idea for the Chamber to publish the results of a member survey. If ya take a look at the results on the inside of today's paper, you'll see it appears ta not only look at the things the organization is doin' well, but points out areas to improve in the future.

The highest scores recorded are the tourism, gettin' the community involved, and promotin' a positive community image. All things that most would assume a Chamber should be good at. The members who responded to the survey also think these activities are important. The promotion of education and work force development was the number one concern expressed by those responding, followed closely by promoting pro-business legislation and representing business issues in the community. The Chamber seems eager to respond to the direction of its membership.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

Whew! It certainly has felt like August in Missouri the past few days. This is a great time to drink your healthy green drinks. Among my favorite is the simplist...blend 1/3 bunch of parsley with 1 cup of pineapple juice (preferably from a glass bottle) with some ice and enjoy. The ease of this drink is that you can also add a variety of your other powered supplements and not have to swallow a mornings worth of capsules. The parsley serves as a source of chlorophyll which freshens the body, it is rich drink with lots of natural potassium. Many herbalists have found that it can be used as an alternative to water retention drugs. Pineapple is not only refreshing, but has beneficial properties of it's own. It is a source of bromelain which is an effective anti-inflammatory and digestive aid. Bromelain is a digestive aid, so definitely go for the glass jars as the taste can be affected by the container. If you cannot deal with the water retention in this hot and humid weather.

There are several powdered green drink available on the market today. You may think yuk! but until you have tried some, don't discard the idea. It makes it easy to get a good days nutrition and to get vegetable fiber. Our lives are changing and these drink may be come as common as the hamburger, I remember when the first McDonald's came to Springfield. I bet until then, most people weren't eating a hamburger a day! Eating habits can and are going to be changed as our time change. Just like my 4 year old grandson who has developed a liking for salad just because he started to eat it, we can begin to add "unusual" things to our diet and soon we will be used to the taste and feeling our bodies have when they are nourished properly.
