The G.A.R. Encampment.

Capt. T. B. Tuttle today received a letter from J. P. Platt, of Kingston, Mo., department commander of the G. A. R. of Missouri, which stated that Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 10, 11, and 12, have been settled upon as the dates for the G. A. R. state encampment, which will be held in Carthage. The committee of advisement will meet here on the 9th.

Commander Platt and his staff will pay Carthage a visit in the future to help along the plans for the encampment, arouse interest, etc. The encampment will be a big thing for Carthage and will bring several thousand strangers here, many of whom have never seen this rich section of Missouri before. The Sons of Veterans and W. R. C. state organizations meet at the same time and the encampment promises to be more than ordinarily successful this year.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

It was bad enough when ya saw those disclaimers printed in magazines for prescription medication. Now I’m seein’ thirty second commercials on tv that are mainly sayin’ who shouldn’t use this new wonder drug. I’ve gotta figure it’s some sort of legal thing.

I have to admit I have read through a good portion of those two page, fine print advertisements, just ta see what they’re afraid of. At least the printed ads usually said what the stuff was supposed ta cure. These tv ads just tell ya ta "ask your doctor about...".

‘Course ya shouldn’t use the stuff if ya have liver trouble or have ingrown toenails or warts.

I’ve gotta wonder how they figured out what ailments ta warn against. What ever this stuff cures it just has ta be worse that any of those things listed that keep ya from usin’ it. I suppose these things are on a "need ta know" basis. Myself, I’m just hopin’ I don’t ever get that curious.

This is some fact, but mostly, Just Jake Talkin.’

The Super Handyman

Q: My concrete patio had a rough finish on it so I installed indoor-outdoor carpeting over it. Recently, I removed the carpeting. Now I can’t find a way to get the old adhesive off the concrete surface. What would you recommend? - G. T.

A: We suggest a paint and varnish remover. It should soften up the adhesive, and then you can scrape away the sludge left behind.

Shop Talk - Liquid Nails is such a good construction adhesive that the manufacturer has come up with a special remover just for it. The remover works on other brands of adhesive and on caulk too. The formula is a gel so it won’t run off and make a mess. It works like a stripper to soften and remove even dry and brittle compounds. There is no harsh odor, and cleanup is simple. You should be able to find it at home centers and hardware stores soon.

Q: I need to cut a hole in the middle of a piece of sheet metal but don’t know what to use. It’s too thick to cut with tin snips. Is there a type of saw that would work? - D. E.

A: Our choice would be a sabre saw with a carbide-tipped metal cutting blade. You should use a drill with a carbide-tipped bit to create a hole in the center of the circle to give you a place to start your saw.

Super Hint - Those old mirror tiles that you might have left over from a project can be put to good use in a dark cabinet or closet, to help you see what’s in the back and help illuminate the dark spaces.
