"Doesn't it ever rain around here?" a motorist asked one of the natives in the far west.
"Rain?" The native spat. "Rain? Why, say, pardner, there's bullfrogs in this yere town over five years old that hain't learned to swim yet."

A city ordinance of Alderson W. Va., states:" No lions shall be allow to run wild on the streets of this city."

And this is the good law today in old Kansas: " When two trains approach each other at a crossing, they shall both come to a full stop, and neither shall start up until the other has gone."

Jasper County 9-1-1 Board
Completes Address Database Review. -

works with local post offices to advise of new construction.

The final version of the Enhanced 9-1-1 Address Database has been received and reviewed by the staff at the 9-1-1 Center. chairman of the Jasper County Emergency Services Board, Harlan Snow, reports that local control of the data has become final with this delivery. Changes and corrections have begun as the new data is prepared for use in dispatching and routing emergency services throughout the County. The Board has struggled with the address portion of the project since errors were detected in earlier versions, and some were found in this last set as well, said Snow. The staff at the Center have worked extra hours to clean up the data and make adjustments that would minimize any required address changes for Citizens of the County.

In addition, the Board has approved the regular reporting to county post offices of any new structures and addresses. The local postal employees are valuable allies in getting this project finally completed, said Snow, who acknowledged that data errors had caused some frustration and concern among Center staff and U.S. Post Office employees.

The final database has been distributed to post offices and telephone companies to facilitate the prompt transition to the corrected addresses as well as make the required entries in the appropriate telephone database. The Board must provide data to at least five different telephone service providers on a regular basis to maintain the integrity of the addressing system. The computerized mapping program that identifies addresses, which are in the databases, will also be upgraded to match the new datasets, said Bill Cade, Executive Director.

This has been a long and difficult process said Snow, who acknowledged that the errors resulted in some residents receiving more than one address.

Just Jake Talkin'
Mornin',

It sometimes seems it's gettin' harder and harder to be nice to folks.

This is particularly apparent when it comes to navigatin' through a busy four-way stop. Sometimes, just 'cause I arrived at an intersection first, it doesn't mean that I'm ready to pull out 'xactly in order. I may want to glance at the map or reach for the sun glasses in the back seat.

I wave to the next car in order. They adamantly wave back as if to say , no, you were here first. I wave for them to go ahead. No,no. You first, the reply is waved. In the mean time, the other two cars are gettin' a little annoyed. Then they both start to pull out at the same time. Both abruptly stop.

By this time the wave happy driver decides if anyone is gonna move it's him. He starts ta move. Usually by this time I'm ready and while they all sit glaring, I gracefully pull through and leave the impending traffic jam.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin'.

Health Notes

Health and Nutrition by Judith Sheldon
If you think you know what goes on in a hospital emergency room because you watch "ER" on TV, you don’t know the half of it. You can fill the gaps with a fascinating book called "Emergency! The Stories from the Nation’s ER’s" by Mark Brown, M.D. It’s a collection of true stories sent to Dr. Brown by emergency room physicians around the country.

"The television show reflects the procedures followed in an ER," Dr. Brown says. "But as well written as the show is, nothing can match the experiences of real people in real situations." Dr. Brown, a Harvard Law School graduate, worked in the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office before going into private practice and eventually, teaching law. He shifted professional gears in 1979 when he enrolled in Dartmouth Medical School.

Many people don’t realize it, but when they’re seen by a doctor in an ER, that person is practicing a specialty. "Until 1968," Brown says, "ERs were staffed with doctors on a rotating basis: one day a gynecologist, another day a cardiologist, etc. So if you came in with a heart attack and the ophthalmologist was on duty, you could be in trouble. In Vietnam they learned if you transported people quickly to specialty trauma units, it would really make a difference.
